VA Tech Families Want to Keep 1-gun-a-month Law

Newsleader.com reports on what should be no surprise to anyone.

Parents of Virginia Tech survivors and victims of the 2007 campus massacre urged Gov. Bob McDonnell on Saturday to keep in place a law that allows the purchase of only one handgun a month.

A bill repealing the law is likely headed to the governor's desk, and McDonnell has previously said he would sign it. The one-gun-a-month-law has been in place since the early 1990s.
What's your opinion? Isn't the one-gun-a-month law one of the most sensible as well as one that would affect lawful gun owners the least?

What is wrong with the gun-rights fanatics that they oppose even something like this?

  1. Because criminals buy guns through FFL dealers--that's why this makes sense? But look at other states. Few have a one-a-month law, and we're doing fine. Besides, concealed carry license holders are already exempt from one a month in Virginia. What we see here is Virginia's laudable attempt to drive down its Brady score.

    1. Straw purchasing is one of the greatest ways, if not the greatest way guns slip into the criminal world. One-gun-a-month interferes with that.

      Quit playin' dumb.

    2. What data do you have on straw purchases? From my observation, many gun owners have one or two firearms--for hunting, for home defense, but that's it. There are enthusiasts like me who collect a variety of guns and enjoy practicing with them, tinkering with them, and so forth. A straw purchaser is a different animal altogether. My prediction is that such an animal is also rare.

    3. There have been some good reports and surveys about straw purchasing, we've even covered some of them on the blog. But, just think about it. Every criminal and especially every gun smuggler in the country utilizes this method. They need guns, how better to get them? It's only common sense. Their girlfriends, their cousins and neighbors, some even actively recruit young people with clean records to buy guns.

The difficult thing to determine is if straw purchasing actually accounts for more gun flow than theft. It might be a close call, but stricter laws can help in both cases.

    4. When you use the phrases, common sense or think about it, I hear a lack of actual evidence.

Well, from gunzdealerz, I mean. I coulda still bought me oneathem Barretts or a whole carload of SKS's and suchlike from "private sellers" (nudge, nudge, wink-wink).

    1. But the SKS should be an acceptable gun, since it has a ten round integral magazine. That's the magic number, right, ten?
