Illinois Gun Laws Advance

Two controversial gun control proposals advanced to the full House Wednesday.

On a partisan vote, the Democratic-controlled House Executive Committee approved a measure requiring handgun owners to register their weapons with the state.

The panel also signed off on legislation that would create a special 2 percent tax on ammunition, which would finance trauma facilities that treat gunshot victims.

  1. Downstate legislators, Democratic and Republican, will kill these two silly bills. If it weren't for Chicago, Illinois would have much less gun control than it does now.

  2. The ammunition tax just seems like another way for Chicago pols to fill their pockets.

I hope there are enough smart legislators in Illinois to "shoot" this thing down. (Pun intended.)

  3. On the contrary, these laws make good sense. Gun violence costs the public too much, the additional revenue would go towards that not to line the pockets of politicians.

    1. Is being that naive comforting?

    2. Not as comforting as being selectively cynical.

  4. Mike- This bill is a huge slap in the face. You are telling hard working Illinois residents, Liberal and Conservative, that they need to pitch in to help out Chicago. I feel bad for them. Gun violence does cost the public too much. However, the solution shouldn't be to punish law abiding citizens with an extra tax. The criminals do not purchase guns legally. They do not purchase ammo legally either.
This law only hurts law abiding citizens, which is usually the case here in Chi-town.

  5. Everyone knows criminals don't buy their guns legally. That's why gun control laws are often aimed at the law abiding. That's how it works.

But, let's not forget where the guns come from originally. You law abiding guys need help to hang on to your property, and that's where sensible gun control laws come in.

    1. Classic behavior of the abuser: Kick your family because you can't strike back at the people who pissed you off in public.

    2. Mike- The problem with this law, is that you are raising sales tax on someone in Metropolis, because gun violence among gang-bangers in Chicago(400 miles away), is at an all time high, and costing the city millions in healthcare. No matter what your thoughts on guns are, this law is bull-shit.
