Accidental Shooting of Texas 12-Year-old While Hunting Squirrels

Local news reports

A shooting near Whitt Sunday involving a 12-year-old boy was found to be accidental, according to the Parker County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the 1700 block of Hardy Road around 6 p.m. to collect evidence after a 12-year-old boy was taken to Palo Pinto General Hospital for an injury to his right ankle, according to Parker County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Danie Huffman.

Two boys, believed to be brothers, were behind the house apparently hunting squirrels, when the 10-year-old handed the older boy a loaded .22-caliber rifle, Huffman said.

The 12-year-old shot himself in the foot and right ankle area, the sheriff’s office reported.

The boy was reportedly transported to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth from Palo Pinto General Hospital and the bullet surgically removed.

The father was reported to be at work at the time, accoridng to Huffman.

Deputies collected the rife from the home during their investigation and the incident was later cleared as an accident.
Do you think these boys had permission to use the .22, or did they do so against dad's instructions?

Either way dad's guilty of negligence, wouldn't you say?  My bet is they had his permission, after all, what's more natural than young boys doin' a little hunting. Besides, they're not stupid. They'd been told never to point the rifle at your foot.

  1. I see this as the equivalent of breaking an arm after falling off a skateboard or a bicycle. Life is dangerous. Your pernicious yearning for safety aims at creating an insipid existence.

    1. Oh, is that right? Boys will be boys, huh? Don't you think gun owners should be responsible with their guns? Now it's like falling off a skateboard?

  3. I got no problem with this one. This is a hunting accident. I love squirrels, but they are not endangered, and hunting them is not a crime. It's considered sporting. Squirrels are quick. Now, in most cities, shooting squirrels would be a serious issue, due to the proximity of others, and the likelihood of stray bullets. But this sounds like an accident. I would bet the dad had given these kids some lessons.
