Merritt Landry, 33, of New Orleans, is facing a second-degree attempted murder charge after shooting Marshall Coulter in the head
A 14-year-old boy is in critical condition after a homeowner shot him in the head on suspicion that the child was about to rob his house.
Merritt Landry, 33, of New Orleans, is facing a second-degree attempted murder charge after shooting Marshall Coulter in the head at 2 a.m Friday.
The teen was unarmed and standing near Landry's vehicle, which was parked in the gated driveway in front of Landry's house on Mandeville Street, when he was shot.
Police say the teen, who has a history of burglary arrests, did not pose an 'imminent threat,' according to the Times-Picayune.
Landry claims otherwise, saying Coulter made a quick movement 'as if to reach for something,' so he shot him out of concern for his own safety, according to an arrest warrant.
Coulter was shot from 30 feet away, according to evidence recovered at the scene. He can't move the left side of his body and doctors say if he survives, he will likely suffer severe brain damage.
By the way, he was a lawful gun owner perhaps with a concealed carry permit. No one checked.
What do you think? Please leave a comment.
Why does he need a concealed carry license on his own property? I'll agree that Landry appears to have overreacted, but we'll see how that plays out at trial.
ReplyDelete"seems to have overreacted." Couldn't you find a way to put it even milder than that? You're a professional wordsmith, c'mon, man.
DeleteHere is another child with a record of burglary of habitation police record. My my, criminals are getting younger and younger.
ReplyDeleteCripple and brain damage, looks like LA got itself another democrat voter. But a 14yo with prior burglaries, he is most probably a life member of the democrat party.
ReplyDeleteOh well the state is gonna end up paying for him one way or the other, at least this way, they will always know where wheels is since they lojack his cool new state supplied ride.
There at least seems to be a little bit of honesty in the story of this kid. A fourteen year old "professional thief" climbing fences at two in the morning with a lookout on the outside. There is even video.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see where this goes as more facts come out. I'm assuming the area had at least some light since he managed a head shot at 30 feet at night. I wonder what the photo of the victim will look like.
MikeB: "I'm surprised the guy was even arrested."
ReplyDeleteOf course you are. We've been telling you for years how self-defense laws work, but you're still surprised.
