Lawful Illinois Gun Owner Leaves Gun in School Bathroom

Local Fox News

A Plainfield southwest suburban man has been charged with bringing a gun to the west suburban school where he worked, the Beacon-News is reporting.

Michael T. Martin, 62, of Plainfield, a contractual worker for the Oswego School District 308 IT Department, has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon on school property, a Class 3 felony.

He was taken to the Kendall County Jail to await a bond hearing.

Police said that at 9:12 a.m., an Oswego East High School staff member found a handgun in a locked faculty restroom on the second floor. As a safety measure, the school was put on lockdown.

During the investigation, "the identity of a subject who was last in the restroom was determined and that subject was located off site for an interview," police said in a statement.

Police said there is no evidence that the subject had any intention of doing anyone any harm.

  1. Golly, usually you only see law enforcement leaving weapons in the bathrooms in gun free zones.

"There was no intent to harm anyone; the gun was merely one that 62-year-old Michael Martin carries on a regular basis"

Strange, I thought there were no carry permits issued unless you were a security guard or a politician or such.

    1. Yeah, that's one of the lies that your side keeps pushing. Greg especially loves that one.

    2. Mikeb, what lie? Illinois was a no-carry state until recently, though people who worked as security--or claimed to, like Donne Trotter--could carry while on duty.

    3. The lie that only celebs and the politically connected can get permits. You love that one, not about Illinois but about NY, NJ and CA.

    4. You have been shown evidence supporting that statement. Your sense of fairness, particularly for the common man, won't let you believe the reality in those states, but as I've told you many times, at the heart of gun control is an elitist belief that some animals are more equal than others.

  2. So it's OK to leave a loaded weapon anywhere? A gun owner is not responsible for his gun, it's location, or that his deadly weapon is not in his control?

  3. Anon,
If you've paid attention to my posts you know I hold gun owners to a high standard when it comes to safeguarding their weapons. This person appears to carry regularly, yet there is no mention of a carry permit because he likely doesn't have them. Illinois has yet to start issuing the court ordered carry permits, though citizens are already working on fulfilling the requirements by taking the required training.
My reference to law enforcement was in regards to a DEA agent leaving his duty sidearm in the restroom on the secure side of the terminal.

  4. I did not read your disapproval of his negligent act of leaving his gun. I'm new here, please don't give me the "if you were paying attention to my posts" snide remark. If carry permits have not been issued yet, it must be illegal for him to have brought the gun into the school. Was this guy a DEA agent?

    1. The trouble with posting anonymously is that we have no idea if you've been here before or not. There have been a great many anonymous commenters over the years, and it's not a reputable name.

    2. It would be useful if you name yourself, Anonymous. Of course you're right. Greg rarely expresses disapproval of anything done by a gun owner.

Why ASSume I have been here. That's a false prejudgment on your part. Something you seem to engage in a lot reading the comments of yours over the last week.

You guys name me, I'll use it, because it does not matter.
