Ames Iowa Accidental Shooting Death - No Charges Expected

Police say one person is dead following what has been described as an accidental shooting in Ames.
Police tell Des Moines television station KCCI that officers were called to a house on the west side of Ames around 10:30 p.m. Friday and found a male with a gunshot wound to his head.
The injured person was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center, where he died.
Police are interviewing witnesses who were present at the shooting.
Police have not yet released the name and age of the person killed.

  1. "Police said in a news release that the accident occurred when 38-year-old Lockman was "handling a loaded, semi-automatic, 9mm handgun."

Exactly what charges were you expecting considering that he seems to have shot himself?

    1. The article you read never actually came out and said it was self inflicted. Perhaps they just got a press release and no one followed up.

  2. Why would they call it an accident? Seems like suicide to me.

    1. Anon, Mike often decides not to wait for charges to be filed to complain that no charges were filed. In this case, next of kin hadn't even been notified, which is likely why the victim's name hasn't been released.
Whether it was accident or intentional, if the death was by his own hand, there is little chance of charges being filed.

    2. Is suicide illegal?

    3. It has been in many jurisdictions, which strikes me as silly, since the only people who could be arrested are failures.

    4. If he's successful, its a moot point, he'll never do it again.

    5. Finally something we can agree on. When a bumbling idiot gun owner accidentally kills himself he has already been punished more than adequately.

    6. Must be one of those laws where society tries to protect life, even your own.

    7. Society has no business protecting my life against my will.

    8. I would agree, society should let you die.

    9. Too bad for you, Anonymous, I'm choosing to stick around.

    10. That's why it's important to prove you are a criminal lying coward, which I have done many times, and will continue to. You lies mean more needless gun shot deaths.

    11. When you're ready to back up your claims with proof, let me know. Otherwise, you're a coward and a liar. You want my proof of that? You never stand by your words.

    12. "Society has no business protecting my life against my will."

Greg, how much did you have to drink before writing that ridiculous comment? You want to do away with the laws against murder and the police too? Sometimes, Greg, I swear you say the damnedest things.

    13. Steve has proven Greg to be a criminal thinking liar by using Greg's own words. Of course Greg denies that, even though his words are there for all to read.

  3. So who described it as accidental, as stated in the first sentence? It reads like the police described it as an accidental shooting.

    1. Anon,
I wasn't commenting on whether it was accidental or intentional. I was commenting on the fact that if someone kills themselves, whether intentional or not, complaining that no charges are expected will doom you to disappointment since you cant punish the guy who did the deed.

    2. Don't know what you are talking about, since I never complained that no charges were filed.
