A 9-year-old Richfield girl was in serious condition Wednesday, a day after she was accidentally shot in the stomach by her 8-year-old male cousin.
Richfield police said the incident occurred just before 4 p.m. Tuesday when the boy, sitting with the girl in the back seat of a car traveling on Main Street near 500 South, apparently found a .45-caliber handgun.
While he handled the firearm it went off, a single round going through the girl’s abdomen.
Police learned of the incident when notified by the hospital. The girl’s vital signs were reported stable, and doctors said she was expected to recover, police said.
Police did not release any other details, noting that the investigation was ongoing.
I suppose it'll take weeks to determine who was driving the car and whose gun it was. Then, chances are it'll be swept under the rug as one of those "no foul play" accidents.
