Utah 9-Year-old Critically Wounded by her 8-Year-old Cousin - Lengthy Investigation Continues

A 9-year-old Richfield girl was in serious condition Wednesday, a day after she was accidentally shot in the stomach by her 8-year-old male cousin.
Richfield police said the incident occurred just before 4 p.m. Tuesday when the boy, sitting with the girl in the back seat of a car traveling on Main Street near 500 South, apparently found a .45-caliber handgun.
While he handled the firearm it went off, a single round going through the girl’s abdomen.
Police learned of the incident when notified by the hospital. The girl’s vital signs were reported stable, and doctors said she was expected to recover, police said.
Police did not release any other details, noting that the investigation was ongoing.
I suppose it'll take weeks to determine who was driving the car and whose gun it was. Then, chances are it'll be swept under the rug as one of those "no foul play" accidents.

  1. You hate our gun rights. You hate our legal system. Are there any other rights you'd care to go on record as hating?

    1. That's rich coming from the guy who has stated he would break the law and ignore the rights of others.

    2. You stated so in your own words, so you are the liar either way.

    3. You're welcome to prove that. You'll remember how, yes?

  2. Every gun owner must be responsible with their lethal weapon. And if they aren't, they need to be held accountable, whether it's their own kid, or another's, or some stranger. Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.

  3. Any gun owner who leaves a loaded .45 in the back seat with two children should be charged with negligence. It speaks loudly that your pro gun commentators don't even speak to that negligence, but cry about having their rights taken away. What right is being taken away? The right to endanger children?

    1. No, the civil right to a proper investigation, rather than a rush to judgement that Mikeb advocates.

    2. Since Mike never said that, you are wrong, or lying.
      Mikes total comment was:
"I suppose it'll take weeks to determine who was driving the car and whose gun it was. Then, chances are it'll be swept under the rug as one of those "no foul play" accidents."
Mike is willing to wait, and experience with past similar incidents shows Mike is probably correct.

    3. Anonymous, why must you lie? Mike goes on and on about how investigating before arresting is impermissible special treatment.

    4. So you like to call people liars. Just like other pro gun posters here.
I quoted Mike. The quote said nothing about "how investigating before arresting is impermissible special treatment." In fact he noted that he would have to wait weeks for the decision of the investigation. His observation that it might well be swept under the rug, is backed by thousands of completed investigations.

    5. Simon is just being slippery again. What I say, almost every day, is that an obviously responsible gun owner should be charged immediately when there's gun negligence involved. The problem is that considering gun misuse a crime is considered optional. If no other damning factors are present, ex-felon, drug dealer, etc., these guys often escape accountability altogether. The first step in escaping that accountability is often the lengthy and thorough investigation.
