Elgin, IL:
An Elgin man has been arrested after going squirrel hunting in his backyard.
John Hegel, 64, of the 500 block of Lavoie, allegedly shot the back patio window of a neighbor’s home in the 600 block of Bent Street, about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to police spokeswoman Sue Olafson. Hegel told police he had been shooting at squirrels when he accidentally hit the window.
Was he using a Barrett?
ReplyDeleteI had squirrels in my house when I bought it. I trapped out and whacked eight of them in about a year. NY has a sort of "Pest Castle Law"; it says that if you have "nuisance" animals, four legged or avian on your property that you can terminate them with extreme prejudice. Catch and release is not legal.
Since I live in the city and don't own a gun I can't shoot them. I used a Hav-a-hart and then put the trap in a contractor size trash bag, put a 2" vacuum hose into the bag, secure the end of the bag and attach the other end of the hose to the exhaust pipe on my truck. It takes about 5-10 minutes to do in a squirrel and they do not struggle, they just pass out.
Shooting a gun, even a pellet gun, in an urban neighborhood is fraught with perils to both life and property.
