If it's true that Obama is afraid of the NRA, wouldn't that change after his re-election? Isn't it possible that he'll be able to do the right thing in his second term and not have as much to lose?Bill Clinton took it on and won. Clinton urged Congress to pass the Brady Bill, which required background checks for gun buyers, and signed it into law in 1993. He signed an assault weapons ban in 1994. He opposed “cop killer” bullets in 1995. “I have never seen a deer, a duck or a wild turkey wearing a Kevlar vest in my life,” Clinton said. And Clinton was reelected in 1996. He turned gun control into a mainstream issue by surrounding himself at event after event with men and women in blue uniforms, America’s fiercest gun control supporters: police officers.Today, nobody wants to take the political risk. They want to make somber statements instead of taking tough action.

Hi
ReplyDeleteWhat did Clinton mean by a cop killer bullet? Are these the ones they spray with Teflon?
Tx
Yes.

Did you read the article that you cited? Teflon coating was added to reduce barrel wear, not to punch through vests.
DeleteI knew he'd fall into my trap. These people are so gullible and ill informed about the things they want to ban.
DeleteCop killer bullets? Bwaaaahhhhaaaaa!
Could it be that politicians remember the election of 1994? I've seen a variety of explanations for why the Democrats lost Congress, but Clinton's attempts to reform healthcare and his promotion of gun control are high on the list. If Obama wins a second term, he won't have anything to lose, but members of Congress will.
ReplyDeleteThe actual wording of the law on cop-killer bullets would have banned all rifles, because except for the most advanced military vests all rifles will penetrate any vest. So even though a deer doesn't wear kevlar, the gun you hunt a deer with is a "cop killer". Never mind that they are almost never used to actually kill cops. We need better research, not more rhetoric.
ReplyDeleteSo, Mike, the question remains: what is a "cop-killer" bullet? How is a cop killer bullet different than any other commonly used bullet?
ReplyDeleteYou threw it out there. Now defend it if you care for more ridicule.
I did not throw it out there. The anonymous commenter Tx did. I just provided the Wiki link.
DeleteWhy did you puppet Clinton's remarks if you don't know what he meant by a "cop killer" bullet? Do you or do you not agree that some bullet designs are cop killer bullets, and why?
