  3. Marriage used to be about property for land owners. For peasants, it was about labor. In many ways, it was exactly what the control side likes--done according to what was best for the society. It's only been since the rise of the middle class and the understanding of individual rights that choice entered marriage.

  4. My great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather both had only one wife. So I assume I am more qualified to be president if that is the purpose of this post.

  5. As my history teacher in high school would say, some of us choose our ancestors better than others.

  6. Personally, I think the first qualification to be an American president, (there are no strict rules that I know of,) is to be a dead-square, honest Yankee.

Since Mitt has no compunctions against lying, that counts him out.

    1. You must be either an American citizen by birth (except for people born before the Constitution was ratified) and at least thirty-five years old.

A lot of southerners and westerners would disagree with your Yankee requirement.

  7. I don't care how many wives a guy's grandfather had, but at least he should avoid opening himself up for such a humorous attack. Same thing with his illegal immigration remarks. It's just stupid for someone with Mexican ancestors to say some of that stuff.

So if your great-great-grandfather owned slaves, you cannot have a different opinion on the subject?
