This is a wonderful example of the proper use of a gun. The man displayed a willingness to get involved as well as restraint in not shooting the bad guy.An unidentified man purchased a knife inside a Salt Lake City Smith’s store, and then began randomly stabbing people in the store.Smith’s employee Dorothy Espinoza told ABC News: “He pulled it out and stood outside the Smiths in the foyer. And just started stabbing people and yelling you killed my people. You killed my people. There is blood all over. One got stabbed in the stomach and got stabbed in the head and held his hands and got stabbed all over the arms.”Smith described how a gun-wielding citizen stopped the man: “A guy pulled gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon and the people from Smith’s grabbed him.”Lt. Brian Purvis told ABC News that the gun owner did the right thing: “This was a volatile situation that could have gotten worse. We can only assume from what we saw it could have gotten worse. He was definitely in the right place at the right time.”

Amazing. A lowly citizen put a stop to a potentially Mass Killing without shooting nine innocent people.
ReplyDeleteHe should have called the police and avoided confronting the man. 911 would have responded in time to prevent any injuries. This guy sounds like a pyscho with a hero complex. He should be remanded to a pysch ward and have all of his weapons confiscated.
ReplyDeletenot sure if srs...
Delete?? It sounds like there already were injuries.Must be a poster boy for The Brady Bunch.
DeleteI think Mikeb is trying to have it both ways claiming that guns being carried in public is bad but giving his approval for this DGU. So which one is it MikeB?
ReplyDeleteI've been pretty clear, are you new around here?
DeleteThe few legitimate DGUs do not nearly offset the tremendous number of deaths and injuries caused by the misuse of guns.
DogGone would condemn the armed citizen. The man with the knife could have rushed him, taken his gun, and committed more crimes. The man with the knife could have forced the armed citizen's hand and required him to shoot -- which means dead innocent bystanders because the armed citizen would surely miss and would have no idea what was beyond his target.
ReplyDeleteAnd let's do it the other way. Let's conflate this example. It shows us how just about all gun owners are incredibly responsible and restrained. Surely we can trust all gun owners because of this one example. We have to. Because if we are to be consistent, when we see one example of a person misbehaving and we conflate that to mean that all armed citizens misbehave, we also have to conflate good behavior across all armed citizens.
He was obviously overcompensating for the size of his penis.
ReplyDeleteSo just how big would ones penis have to be before he doesnt have to be over compensating for.
DeleteIf a guy has a huge penis, would it be considered a deadly weapon and have to a concealed license for it before he leaves home?
The larger the penis, the smaller the gun?
What about all the women, would they have to wear a strap on to compensate for that? What else would they be compensating for?
You realize my comment was sarcastic, right?
DeleteGuav, do you realize it's usually the pro-gun guys who mention the penis.
DeleteMike, I've been debating the gun control issue online for probably a decade now, and there is virtually no extensive thread with numerous participants where one of the people arguing the gun-control side does not compare guns to phallic symbols or imply Freudian motivations for gun ownership.
DeleteThe pro-gun side, in response to this common ad hominem attack, has taken to sarcastically mentioning penis size like I just did. If you referring to anything else, please show me examples, as I have no idea what you're talking about.
Guav, were you the one to bring it up on this thread, yes or no.
DeleteThat's the way I usually see it. One of you guys bringing it up by saying "oh, the gun control guys always bring up the penis substitute argument."
Yes, in this single instance, I brought it up—sarcastically. The only time the pro-gun side brings it up is as a joke, a REACTION to the extremely common anti-gun attack.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have to look too far to find examples of what I'm talking about—there are numerous instances from YOUR BLOG:
Of Mice and Men, of Penises and Penis Substitutes
NOT Guns; That OTHER Penis Substitute, LOL!
For those who have confronted their penis / firearm confusion.
There's three, I'm sure there are dozens more in posts and comments. What about the rest of the internet? Let's see what I can find in 30 seconds:
Basically, there was a feeding frenzy after Obama was elected, and paranoid white men around the country had to buy some bigger and louder phallic symbols to stave off anxieties caused by the scary new President ….. You can never have too many steel objects of phallic reassurance around. It’s either that or grabbing your crotch every two seconds to make sure it’s still there.

Therefore, as a scientist, I just am making the hypothesis that men who feel the need to carry handguns must have incredibly tiny penises. No, I’m not talking about sportsmen and hunters … But a handgun? A concealed handgun? Or losers who make the NRA or open carry organizations a primary driving force in their lives? GOTTA be guys with tiny little penises.
----------------------------------------------------
I don’t know why “arm the women” is such an appealing idea when it comes to fighting rape and domestic violence. I think it’s a psycho-sexual thing. Instead of laying a challenge to the dominant worldview that accepts male violence, we try to grant women access to the same male violence by obvious phallic symbols.
----------------------------------------------------
Irrational Phallus Worship: Though there’s no real world reason to believe Obama and Eric Holder are out to symbolically castrate gun nut America by taking away their phalluses/guns …
----------------------------------------------------
But the symbolic attraction of guns for sexually frustrated young men needs to be explored. It’s obvious that the gun as devastating phallic tool gives any average dork the predictably perfect, mind-blowing ejaculations

More Guns Don't Enhance Penis Size or Usefulness

It's usually the pro-gun guys who mention their penises? SERIOUSLY? That is seriously your claim?
Like I said, the pro-gun side, in response to this common ad hominem attack, has taken to sarcastically mentioning penis size like I just did. If you referring to anything else, show me examples.
Guav, You're one of those guys who has a real problem admitting when he's wrong. YOU brought it up in this thread and that's usually the way it goes.
DeleteDo I have to link to one more example than you did? Or, better yet, why don't you grow up and admit you were wrong, not a "yes, but" kinda wrong, just fucking wrong.
You're either a compulsive liar or clinically insane.
DeleteI added your blog to my RSS reader in the hopes of finding a rational gun control advocate to debate. I can clearly not expect that here, so I'll no longer be reading your blog (I assume if every pro-gunner stopped reading the anti blogs, you guys would have no readership at all).
My search continues ...
No, Guav, I'm neither one of those and you know it.
DeleteMaybe what you were seeking was not so much a "rational gun control advocate to debate" but someone you could bully with your NRA talking points and refusal to back down even when shown to be wrong.
Keep searching my friend.
No, just someone not totally fucking retarded.
DeleteIn the few weeks I've been commenting here, you began by insulting me immediately, then went on to attack a comment without even reading it (not realizing I was agreeing with you), ignored a repeated question for three days and then lied about misunderstanding it, and randomly make absolutely absurd and unsupportable claims, and then refuse to even try to support them.
I can't deal with you for the simple fact that you are a complete and total idiot.
Well, you're entitled to your opinion. I think that's a bit severe in describing me and what I do, but whatever.
DeleteIt really sounds like you can't stand someone who has a differing opinion to yours and then it got intolerable when I caught YOU bringing up that stupid penis joke and tried to force you to admit you were wrong.
Nonsense—I LOVE to debate, and this is one of the topics I enjoy debating. In order to debate, you must have someone with a differing opinion. I DESIRE people with differing opinions. I have been debating this particular topic for a decade, and I can count on one hand the number of times I have insulted someone the way I just insulted you. What I just did is to treat you the way you treated me—and now it's "a bit severe." Poor baby.
DeleteI'm not interested in people who can be "bullied by propaganda," because then there's no debate. And example of someone on your side who I respect, enjoyed commenting with, and who rarely ceded a point is Baldr. Obviously I thought he was wrong most of the time, and he me, but we had good discussions. But he doesn't allow comments anymore, so I was forced to seek out debate with rational, thinking people elsewhere. I have certainly not found that here.
Far from refusing to admit I'm wrong, the very fact that you are clinging to the fucking fantasy that "the pro-gun side usually beings up penises"—a claim so demonstratably false and absurd that I can't even believe you said it in the first place, just proves to me that you're not a serious, thinking person with whom I can find any common ground. You're just a clown, Mike.
Which is probably why your side continues to lose. Keep wasting time on this futile blog. I'm not going to.
I agree with you about Baldr.
DeleteGuav-Sheesh- We get the point, you are hung up on penises.
