Draining the 2nd Amendment Swamp (Commentary)

SI Live
  • President Barack Obama is going to confiscate your legally owned weapons.
He isn’t. He is so far from doing that it’s comical to believe otherwise. There’s no constitutional mechanism for him to do so. There’s no practical way for him to do so. And he has no motivation to do so, because he’s on record defending the rights of sportsmen, hunters and — this is crucial — people who believe in armed self-defense to own guns. As Vice President Joe Biden said during the 2008 campaign, “Barack Obama ain’t taking my shotguns, so don’t buy that malarkey.”

He makes a number of interesting points. What do you think?

  1. I think you should post the rest of the Op-Ed. The opinions are definitely not as straight-forward as this excerpt would have anybody believe.

As for Obama not confiscating guns, sure, I believe it. But given that his followers, including yourself, seem to be advocating confiscations of certain kinds of weapons (if not all of them), I'm not so sure this falls in the entirely paranoid category. Certainly Dianne Feinstein is on record as saying she'd confiscate certain legally owned guns. Given that she introduced the new AWB, that certainly freaks people out.

  2. Sure, he doesn't want to confiscate all our guns, just the most effective ones. And no, they likely won't do door to door confiscation, they'll just want to do Diane's idea of registering them and requiring our estates turn them in when we die. A stealthy, long term plan for confiscation. Frankly, we don't find that idea any more palatable.

  3. Was Obama against the Chicago handgun ban when he was a community organizer there?

  4. It's interesting, Mikeb, that you post the point that you agree with, while leaving out all the ones that say essentially the same things that we've been telling you for a long time now. Of nine points, one is neither here nor there, two are on your side, and six are in support of our positions.

    2. I don't recall you being so charitable about my comments, despite my having said the same things.
