We're gonna need a new definition of "mass shooting." Too many of these are happening in non-gun-free zones lately. It make the pro-gun guys, like Bruce Krafft look bad for insisting that ONLY Loughner did his thing in a non-gun-free zone.
Fact #7: There have been 61 mass shootings in the U.S. since 1982. The killer used a legally obtained weapon in 49 of them.
And 60 of those 61 mass murders have occurred in supposedly “gun-free” zones.
Mother Jones put together a nice display from which we can glean several facts. Number one, they do not only happen at gun-free zones, and two, the shooters usually are lawful gun owners, and three, no armed good guys were able to stop them even if they were present.

Mike,
ReplyDeleteYou said: "no armed good guys were able to stop them even if they were present."
What about the recent one in Oregon? Or Appalachian School of Law? There's probably more, but those are the first two that spring to mind without looking for more.
OK, so I just posted before looking at the Mother Jones piece. Interesting. Quite the cherry picking. They left out the law school, and they left out the church in, I believe, Colorado a couple years back.
DeleteNo wonder they didn't find any where somebody stopped the shooter--they purposefully left these out. I'm gonna call Bullshit on them and Journalistic Fraud for both them and the people in the media who keep citing this PoS review.
I'm sure there were some which would be exceptions to the rule. And I wouldn't be surprised if there was some purposeful cherry-picking in that report. Both sides do it.
DeleteBut you said that it was a fact that no gun guy has stopped a mass shooting, and the Mother Jones report has been cited many times last week and weekend to prove this same thing, and yet it leaves out every case where this has happened.
DeleteThe argument that its ok to cherry pick because the other side does (whichever side this argument comes from) just comes off as 6 year olds going back and forth. If you're going to cherry pick, you're not a journalist; you're a political hack and lobbyist posing as a journalist.
Guns are banned in NY state,at least they were the last time I checked.
ReplyDeleteDid you post that on the wrong thread?
DeleteGuns are banned in clubs and bars because they serve alcohol. So odds are this was in a gun free zone.
ReplyDeleteYou figure the motorcycle club has a liquor license? Keep guessin', man. That's what your argument is based upon.
DeleteMikeb, I'd be shocked to hear about a motorcycle club that doesn't have a liquor license, but it's possible. What you're failing to recognize is the different categories of shooting involved:
ReplyDelete1. Escalated argument--that's likely what this was.
2. Grievance shooting--the guy who killed his wife and others at the nail salon in California fits this.
3. Slaughter to make a name for the shooter--that's what happened in Tucson, Aurora, and Newtown. I'll refrain from giving the shooters what they want by naming them.
Of those, the first two can happen in gun-free zones or in places that don't ban carry. People who are angry enough to let an argument get out of hand aren't likely to obey a sign, anyway. People who have a grudge won't care, either.
But in the third category, a gun-free zone is ready-made to provide the shooter with many unarmed targets.
Gunsucks drinking alcohol and expressing their moronic opinions leads to violence.
