California Students Hurt In Accidental Shooting By Cop At School Safety Event

Three California elementary school students were wounded in an allegedly accidental shooting with a police weapon at a safety demonstration on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reported.
An officer's gun discharged and no one was hit by an errant bullet, according to the Associated Press. But it unleashed a murky chain of events that left the three youngsters with cuts and scrapes.
Two kids were treated at the hospital while the other child was escorted home by his parents.
The apparent accident occurred around 11:15 a.m in Newman Elementary School, outside Los Angeles, where the Chino police department was participating in Red Ribbon Week events.

  1. Someone sure had their thinking caps on when they thought this up. Mike, how exactly does this event fall under the gun owner idiots tag. Perhaps government gun idiots would be more accurate....

CHINO, Calif. (AP) — Three children were injured by shrapnel after a fellow elementary school student pulled the trigger of an assault rifle mounted on a police motorcycle during a school assembly, authorities said.

The AR-15 was locked to the side of the motorcycle that was on display at Newman Elementary School on Wednesday during an anti-drug program when a student managed to fire it, Chino police spokeswoman Tamrin Olden said.

"The bullet disintegrated when discharged by striking a metal plate where the barrel rests against the weapons mount," and metal debris apparently struck some children and caused minor injuries, she said.

"It is likely that metal debris struck two children resulting in extremely minor injuries," Olden said, adding that the children were treated at a hospital and released.

A third student was examined at the school and released to parents, she said.

The children were treated for cuts and scrapes, said Fire Department spokeswoman Massiel Ladron De Guevara.

The weapons mount holding the rifle had several fail-safes, including the metal plate, Olden said.

There was no immediate word on whether a police officer was nearby when the accidental discharge occurred.

Rifles have been removed from other police motorcycles while the shooting is investigated, Olden said at a news conference.

The shooting occurred while police visited the school for Red Ribbon Week, an annual national event that features a series of activities designed to raise awareness about drug and alcohol abuse.

    1. You always try to differentiate between LEO and civilian gun owners. The truth is you're all one big group. And too many of you are unfit and dangerous.

    2. Mike, the differentiation between law enforcement and civilians has been used extensively by gun control advocates. Often citing law enforcement's "superior" training. In fact, recently the Chicago Police Chief used this reasoning when speaking out against concealed carry in Illinois.
Those who also speak out against civilian ownership of rifles such as the one in this article often comment that they should only be allowed to be possessed by the military and law enforcement.
Gun control advocates also push legislation that puts the power to decide whether citizens can get a carry permit. (may issue) Shall issue permit legislation is the product of the misuse of this discretion wielded by law enforcement officials.
So if they are different in these cases, why shouldn't they be considered different in this case? In fact, with their "superior" training, shouldn't they be held to a higher standard?

    3. Mikeb, you keep saying that, but you never provide evidence to establish your claim. As always, speculation and wishful thinking are not evidence.

    4. I figure there are three groups of lawful gun owners, military, police and civilian. The training goes down with each group and the incidents of misuse are exactly anti-proportional. Does that make sense? You know what I mean, right?

  2. Seems like the Cop did not shoot anyone. Also, it doesn't sound like an accident. The kid pulled the trigger and the gun fired - just like it is supposed to do.

    1. And people were hurt as a result.

    2. Mike - your headline implies the cops shot someone accidentaly. The headline should be that people were shot intentionally by a student who obtained a weapon that was not properly secured by the police.

  3. True, he didn't shoot anyone, but he's still responsible for allowing access to a loaded weapon.

  4. "A preliminary investigation has revealed police did not properly follow established safeguards and procedures when a rifle accidentally discharged at Newman Elementary School injuring three students Wednesday morning, the department’s chief said."

"According to the Chino Police Department’s policy on patrol rifles, the chamber of such a weapon must be empty and the rifle be stored in the locked vehicle’s rifle rack or trunk."
