A group of some 30 African-American gun rights advocates marched in South Dallas Wednesday evening to promote self-defense and protest police shootings.

The newly formed group, calling themselves the Huey P. Newton Gun Club after one of the founders of the 1960s Black Panther party, open-carried rifles and shotguns on their evening walk along Malcom X and Martin Luther King boulevards. The peaceful activists, clad in black, according to the Dallas Morning News, chanted “Black Power” and “Justice for Michael Brown” along their route.

“We think that all black people have the right to self-defense and self-determination,” said Huey Freeman, a march organizer. “We believe that we can police ourselves and bring security to our own communities.”

  1. "Two dozen protesters — most of them armed — from a gun club named after the founder of the original Black Panther Party peacefully marched through parts of South Dallas on Wednesday."

"Established about three months ago, the Huey P. Newton Gun Club calls for an end to shootings by police of unarmed individuals — particularly blacks. It also asks people to consider carrying weapons “to protect themselves,” according to a news release."

“We need to arm ourselves, not to attack anybody, but in self-defense,” said Darrin X, a representative of the New Black Panther Party. “We can’t let people just come into our community, whether they are law enforcement or not, and just gun our people down and there is no accountability.”

Its interesting that this group seems to predate the festivities in Missouri, and like the other open carry events, there was no violence.

    1. Yes, and like all open carry incidents there is a clear message of threat and menace.

    2. So SS, you think any group that names itself after Huey Newton is proposing non violence?

Actually I think a better name would have been the Robert Williams Gun Club.

"Williams helped gain gubernatorial pardons for two African-American boys convicted for molestation in the controversial Kissing Case of 1958. He also succeeded in integrating the public library and the public swimming pool in Monroe. He obtained a charter from the National Rifle Association and set up a rifle club, which became active defending blacks from Ku Klux Klan nightriders. He used the NAACP to support Freedom Riders who came to Monroe in the summer of 1961."

Newton has become something of a folk hero in regards to his forming the Black Panther party. Hopefully the New Black Panther Party can really put the new in the party and work to overcome the perceptions of the old party.

    4. It's not perception that Newton was a criminal and murderer, it's fact. It's telling that you won't speak against using a murderers name for their group.

Anon, they likely picked the name for the shock value. I said what my preference would have been. They didn't ask for my input and I didn't try to join the group because its too far to drive for the meetings.
I don't care if they call themselves "The He Man Woman Haters Club" (if you recognize the name then your age is showing). Their actions are no more better or worse than other groups, and that is what's important.

    6. Nope, what's important is that they named themselves after a killer. They should be on a police, or FBI watch list. They didn't ask, I did, and it's telling that you still think it's fine that they name themselves after a killer, then you make a joke about it.

    7. That's odd that you think they should be on a watch list. I thought guys like you opposed that kind of thing.

ss, I recognize that club name. You made me smile with the reference.

I made a joke about it because you seem to think that the name is more important than what the group represents. Here is a group, who, unless someone has a reference that shows they are nothing but a typical gang, seems to be speaking the same message as the person I mentioned, Robert F. Williams.

"In a public release to the media, the new group advised that they will “conduct the first of an ongoing and necessary armed self-defense patrols through our communities in the coming week."

“We think that all black people have the right to self-defense and self-determination,” said Huey Freeman, a march organizer. “We believe that we can police ourselves and bring security to our own communities.”

"Walking and talking to local residents throughout its rally, the group stopped at a restaurant and ate alongside a Dallas Police Department deputy chief and shift lieutenant who were already patronizing the establishment."

If their motives are pure, then there should be nothing to fear from this group. When you look at their goals, they have some valid concerns that aren't being met through government services. In fact one of their issues is violence from the government.

Mike, I believe this Anon is in favor of government intrusion in aspects if it will save even one life. Unless of course it was an intrusion developed by Bush. Even if it was supported by Democrats.
He likely thinks I should be on a watch list too. Though technically, I already am. If I don't show up monthly, they'll at the very least come looking for me to get the equipment back that they issued me.

They are already saying cities should get rid of police, they can do that job themselves. I find advocating getting rid of police is promoting a lawless society. Yes, I think if they name their club after a murderer it says a lot about the character and goals of their group. I guess you think a group that calls themselves the Charles Manson Club should be in charge od civil security for New York.

I'd like to see your reaction and that of your neighbors if a these guys suddenly appeared in your little Minnesota town.

If they conducted such a march here there would be no problem provided they had carry permits which would be taken care of by the police.
However, this group marched to bring attention to violence and law enforcement issues in their own communities. Except for the mention of Michael Brown, all of the issues are ones taking place locally.
They even ate with police officials in a restaurant and gave the police advance notice of their plans. One important measure of their sincerity in dealing with crime and violence in their neighborhoods that they claim the police is ineffective against is whether they are willing to go up against the pervasive "don't snitch" mentality.

    13. What about their goal to replace themselves for a police force?

    14. If the police don't provide the services they are supposed to, then what recourse is there? They cant even sue because the police aren't obligated to protect individuals. And in their eyes, there seem to be times when its hard to tell which is worse, the criminals, or the government.

    15. C'mon, ss, I watch Fargo. If a group of black militant-looking open carriers appeared in your town the local citizenry would flip out.

    16. It doesn't surprise me at all that you would support a group that wants to eliminate the police and find it just fine that they name themselves after a murderer. You are more than just a gun loon. You are a danger to a peaceful society.

    17. "I watch Fargo. "

I haven't watched the series, only the movie. Fargo is no more real or accurate than is Mayberry.

Actually they claim that they can police themselves, not quite the same as eliminating the police. But then looking at their web site, they make this claim,

"In Dallas the police have murdered over 70 unarmed individuals, most of the black and brown men, over the last ten years. Excluding a recent incident where police testimony was contradicted by surveillance footage, there have been no indictments since 1973."

If this is accurate, then I can understand their not exactly feeling all warm and fuzzy about the police.

    19. I was wondering about the characters in Fargo. The TV series is just like the movie. They call it "Minnesota nice" the way they talk to each other. I find it surprising you compare it to Mayberry because the Coen Brothers are pretty sharp at partraying rural characteristics. Anyway, I still think a group of gun toters like the ones pictured above would absolutely terrify a small town just about anywhere in the States. I don't know why you're denying that.

    20. Like most TV shows, the characters are a caricature, as for this group showing up in my town, keep in mind that they were marching in their own neighborhoods, where the grievances they speak of are happening.

I'm sorry Anon, you must have missed this part of the article,

“We think that all black people have the right to self-defense and self-determination,” said Huey Freeman, a march organizer. “We believe that we can police ourselves and bring security to our own communities.”

  2. These people who use Huey Newtons name should read up on how much a criminal and murderer Newton was. If they are citing his name as a path to follow, they must be criminals and murderers.
