Another CCW Killer

Guilty of Killing Police Officer:
In a tearful statement to the Miktarian family earlier this month, Thompson admitted he fired the shots that killed the officer during a traffic stop in the predawn hours of July 13, 2008, because of loud music coming from Thompson's car
.

Of course, CCW killers are nothing new, but we're finding more and more of these folks have had numerous brushes with the law.

  1. Yet as a whole, they have fewer brushes with the law than the general population.

I seem to remember some odd complaint about the NRA advancing their agenda on fear... but the VPC doesn't deserve this criticism?

  2. 0.00000007% of CCW holders murder people every year in America. That's from Josh Sugarmann's recent report. This means that you are twice as likely to be killed by lightning as murdered by a CCW holder.

Unless you think the VPC are lying of course.

No, it isn't. It's actually from Kevin H. trying to interpret stats he doesn't understand.

  4. Sorry, but insults won't cut it. Josh sugarmann found that from May of 2007 to about last June there was 166 murders during that period by CCW holders.
It was published in the Huffington Post.

That's not even one per day out of MILLIONS of people that have a permit to carry deadly weapons nearly anywhere.

Actually, this number represents a very conservative estimate. As Sugarmann notes: "
Above is the current tally of killings committed by concealed handgun permit holders identified through news accounts from May 2007 to the present broken out by specific categories. Recognizing that the VPC is relying primarily on news reports, the actual numbers are most likely far higher."

  7. Even if 100 times Josh Sugarmann's estimate killed people, it would still be less than one thousandth of a percent of CCW holders.

  8. AzRed: Since there no numbers to support how many CCW holders there are in the US--your factoid is less than factual.

  9. With the numbers that are out there, his "factoid" can be taken as a good aproximation (i.e. unbelievably small numbers of "card-carrying gunloons" commit murder).

  10. Shorter Kevin H: 'I have no facts so I'll make up my own.'

  11. Shorter than Jadegold: "I resort to ad hominem attacks because I have no rational argument."

No facts? I presented to you the numbers from the VPC!
So either you claim that a major gun control group is lying and thus irrelevant, or that CCW holders are not too terrible a threat.
Ignoring the discussion and resorting to petty insults is simply pitiful.
Why would MikeB leave this blog in such incompetent hands?

  12. Correction, Kevin H. You produced numbers the VPC states are low and attempted to create a ratio using a number of your own making.

  13. Fair enough.
So how many killings do you suppose there really are in a year by CCW holders? 60? 100? One a day?

  14. Kevin H: The point you're missing is that there shouldn't be any.

The NRA and various gunloon groups are telling us that CCW holders are law-abiding and model citizens.

Of course, the reality is that that many of the so-called 'law-abiding' really aren't.

  15. "Since there no numbers to support how many CCW holders there are in the US--your factoid is less than factual."

If there are no numbers to support how many CCW holders there are, then the numbers of CCW holders who commit murder are even less relevant.

  16. I don't think I'm missing that point. In fact, I think we could go so far as to say, there shouldn't be any murders ever.

I'll agree with you in that you really have to be a true gunloon to think that CCW holders never violate any law, but what I was saying was that CCW holders are one of the least problematic.
