Quote of the day
“However
captivating such arguments may appear upon a merely casual or
superficial view of the subject, they are believed to be specious, and
to rest upon premises at variance with all the fundamental principles
upon which the government
is based; and that, upon a more mature and careful investigation, as to
the object for which the right was retained their fallacy becomes
evident. The dangers to be apprehended from the existence and exercise
of such right, not only to social order, domestic tranquillity and the
upright and independent administration of the government, but also to
the established institutions of the country, appears so obvious as to
induce the belief that they are present to every intelligent mind, and
to render their statement here unnecessary.”--State v. Buzzard, 4 Ark. (2 Pike) 18

Florida Woman Injured by Dropped Gun
Local news reports
An Arlington woman was hospitalized Friday afternoon after she
accidentally shot herself in her leg while cleaning out her husband’s
pants in their home in the 5200 block of Burdette Road, according to the
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The woman, said to be in her 60s, picked up her husband’s pants and shook them at about 1:15 p.m., Sgt. Felipe Alicia said.
“He carries a firearm in his pants pocket and it fell out and went off,” Alicia said. “ ... There are no signs of foul play or any signs of violence and we are classifying this as an accidental injury.”
Alicia said it was a small caliber gun and there were no other issues. City paramedics transported the woman to Memorial Hospital of Jacksonville.

Another run in with neo-Nazis
And I feel good.
As I said, this wasn't my first since I had run ins with the Front National and Vlaams Blok when I lived in Belgium ("you really shouldn't speak another language since we are really stupid people"). Maybe they didn't bother me since the languages I was also speaking were English and Russian (as well as the other community's language).
Once again, speaking another language, in this case Dutch, was nearly as much fun, but not as up close and personal as dealing face to face with members of the Front National or Vlaams Blok.
Anyway, posting that they were assholes who would have been killed under the Nazi's action T4 (killing the mentally ill) along with the fact that their Latin is wrong ("Europe's Sword" is "Europae Gladium" or "Gladium Europae") in Dutch earned me an immediate ban from "Gladius Europa" (sic).
I'm sure my draft dodging great-grandfather (from Bismarck's Army) would have been proud. I wish I knew his sister since I know that she went through both World Wars and Communism (if you know a Lena Fuchs or her family from Meerane...).
My mother was in Berlin when the wall came down (and I was sitting in England waiting for the knock that would have said "your country needs you.").
Let's face it, I consider myself European since I am first generation (being born here) American on my dad's side and my mother has a long heritage of European nationalities (mostly English and German with some "French"). I fit in when I lived in Belgium.
Anyway, I couldn't deliver my coup de grace of:
to make the point that real Europeans want fuck all to do with this nonsense. We've been there and done that.
So, where is JFPO with their posturing when there are real Neo-nazis out there?
Anyway, given my background, I am probably much better at fighting these people without a gun than JFPO is with them.
Anyway, if you know a European language (besides English) and want to have a giggle: the "Gladius Europa" Facebook page is a fun playground.
They don't like real Europeans telling them that they are fucked up: especially if it is in a real European language.

People unclear on the concept
The youngest Nobel prize winner ever who is a brave young woman fighting for the right to education despite being shot in a murder attempt:
Of course, we have the village idiots trying to persuade people that a young woman who showed bravery and conviction despite being shot has something to do with allowing guns on campus. Additionally, this was a young woman who was deemed worthy of a Nobel Prize.
Wow, who is calling whom a twit?
You know who else thought she was a "twit"? The Taliban.
And Afghanistan was as Stateless as you could get under the Taliban.
Trust me, these people aren't the brightest stars in the firmament.

Last time, we had someone saying that "We the People" came from the Declaration of Independence.
Once again, the Kroger Facebook page provides a pearl of ignorance:
I'm not sure if this person is saying that all gun owners are stupid or that he is disagreeing with the proposition that all gun owners are stupid.
But, given the grammar and spelling, I'll go with he is saying that all gun owners are stupid.
And he has more than made his point.

Can we?
We have endless sensationalism of ebola in the media, and not nearly enough emphasis on the far greater loss of life and health from guns.
Both kinds of loss are preventable. We can and should do more, for the prevention of BOTH.
Of course the conservatives, the ones who are science deniers and science illiterates, seek stupid solutions that we know won't work.
They want to take away the freedom of sick people, but protest their freedom is pretty much entirely based on access to deadly force.
So......following the logical conclusion, would the gun loons consider it justifiable to shoot anyone who either quarantined them individually, or regionally, or nationally?
Just wondering.
Watervliet, NY Asks Pistol Permit Applicants for Facebook Passwords
TTAG via Kurt Hofmann
The photo above shows an application for a pistol permit as used by the Watervliet, New York police department. It comes to us from “Mazz,” a member of the nyfirearms.com forum [registration required]. As you can see the app asks applicants for their “Facebook & Password.” Considering the document’s homemade look and the absurdity of the request, I called the Watervliet PD for confirmation and clarification. I got Chief Ron Boisvert . . .
The Chief told TTAG that the sheet shouldn’t have been in the application packet – and won’t be in future. “It’s for internal use only,” he said.
Yes, well, the Chief said he uses the form to gather the applicant’s Facebook deets during a face-to-face interview. Why make note of the password? “We don’t,” he insisted. “We ask the applicant to log on to Facebook in front of us.” So the Chief scrolls through the applicant’s Facebook page searching for . . . ?
“Pages they’re looked at, friends – anything that reflects on the character of the applicant.” I pointed out that there’s a big difference [in terms of privacy] between viewing a Facebook page as a friend and viewing it as the owner. The Chief wasn’t bothered by the distinction.
Kurt said, "I'm hoping it's a hoax."I don't see why it would be. To me it appears to be a bumbling attempt to effectively process the may-issue system of granting permits. I say bumbling, because I suspect the tech-unfriendly folks who put that form together didn't know that one can view another's Facebook page without the password. They probably didn't know about the Friend status for viewing, which would accomplish the desired goal.

Texas Gun Dealer- and All Around Swell Guy - Goes to Jail
Garrett Riedesel, 24, owned Garrett’s Gun Vault, also known as Double D Gun Shop.
Guns dot com
A former gun store owner in Victoria, Texas, has been sentenced to federal prison this week for possession of an unregistered short-barreled shotgun.
A federal judge sentenced Garrett Riedesel to 24 months in prison and two years of supervised release.
When Riedesel entered a guilty plea, he admitted to the possession of a Remington 870 shotgun equipped with a 7-inch barrel, which puts the overall length 15 inches, well under the legal standard.
Federal agents raided Reidesel’s store, Garrett’s Gun Vault, on March 13, where they seized 117 firearms that were not properly logged into record books — something that’s required by federal law. Agents also found four weapons that were required to be registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, but Riedesel only admitted to possessing the shotgun.
The investigation began after customers reported having trouble retrieving firearms that had been dropped off at Garrett’s Gun Vault for repair.
According to local media, customers started to complain when Riedesel stopped responding to their phone calls about guns they dropped off for repair.
Judge Upholds NC State Fair Gun Free Status
Guns dot com
This led GRNC to file suit in county court seeking a preliminary injunction to suspend the “no guns” policy for the upcoming fair, set to begin on Oct. 16.
Wake County Judge Donald Stephens denied the injunction Monday.
“I do have a great respect for the constitutional right for citizens to possess and bear arms, but I do believe that it would be unwise and imprudent for firearms to be carried into the State Fair,” said Stephens. “And if there’s some way that I can interpret these statutes to prohibit that, I will.”
Minnesota Concealed Carry Permit Holder Loses his Permit
from ssgmarkcr
The complaint said Lee got up and ran at the woman to retrieve the purse, but she drove at Lee and lifted her arm making some sort of gesture that, in fear of being shot, prompted Lee to grab his handgun, insert a full magazine and fire around the fleeing vehicle. The driver apparently gave him the finger, and angrily, he fired an additional shot at the car in effort to pop the tires, Lee told police.
I came across this visiting a Minnesota concealed carry forum. Comments there were universally balanced between what an idiot he is for shooting when there was no threat and wondering who his instructor was and WTF. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the guy is looking at a couple of felonies. There were several articles out there, but this one had the most information IMHO.
"A man apparently attempting to track down a purse thief at Como Lake in St. Paul fired multiple shots at the fleeing driver, and used the hood of a woman's car to steady his shot.
Matrix Richard Lee, 50, has been charged with dangerous discharge of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm. According to charges, Lee and his fiancee were sitting on a bench at Como Lake when he saw movement near his car, noticing a white car next to the passenger side of his vehicle, his fiancee's purse in plain view. Lee said he saw a woman exit his car carrying his wife's purse and get into the driver's seat of the white car.

Lee's permit to carry and handgun have been taken by police, and they found two spend casing in the parking lot. Even though Lee says he thought the woman had a weapon, Ramsey County attorney John Choi says that wasn't the case, and Lee didn't have the right to open fire in a public park when there was no threat of great bodily harm to himself or others.
"Just because you have the permit to carry doesn't give you license to fire it recklessly in our community," he said.
Lee says he got his permit to carry back in May because the restaurant where he works has been robbed a couple of times recently, and now he thinks the justice system is taking aim at the wrong person."
Georgia Lawful Gun Owner Commits a Domestic Mass Shooting
Local news reports
Three people are dead, including two teenagers, after a shooting Tuesday afternoon in a Gwinnett County apartment. But police late Tuesday had not determined what caused a man to shoot four of his relatives and then kill himself.
A witness called 911 after hearing gunshots, Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith said, and in the 6000 block of Bannor Lane in Peachtree Corners, they found 13-year-old Kayla Serrano and 19-year-old Andre Mclean dead at the scene.
The two were the niece and nephew of the alleged shooter, 30-year-old Brandon Mclean, and police believed he used a handgun to shoot the two as well as two other relatives – his mother, 57-year-old Betty Mclean, and her sister, 52-year-old Charlotte Longnecker. So much for the Second Amendment protects the First's Freedoms.
Anita Sarkeesian, a feminist known for her critical look at how women are portrayed in popular media cancelled a talk at Utah State University, citing Utah gun laws, after an email threatening a campus shooting was sent to the school.
The e-mail threatened "the deadliest school shooting in American history" if Anita Sarkeesian was allowed to speak at the school. The email is purported to have been written by a student with access to a semiautomatic rifle, several pistols and pipe bombs.
"I'm giving you a chance to stop it," the message reads, demanding that Sarkeesian's presentation be canceled.
The writer of the threatening email called Sarkeesian "everything wrong with the feminist woman" and blames feminism for the emasculation of Western men. The message also referred to Marc Lepine, the gunman behind a deadly attack against women at a Canadian university in 1989, as a hero and promised a similar shooting at USU, specifically referencing Sarkeesian, attendees at the presentation, and students and staff at the women's center.
Sarkeesian asked school officials whether firearms would be allowed in the auditorium where she was scheduled to speak. USU officials replied that, in accordance with Utah law, anyone with a valid concealed carry permit would be able to enter with a gun, according to a statement released by the university.
Sarkeesian said she requested pat-downs or metal detectors for those coming to the presentation but was denied based on Utah's firearms laws.
Of course, the lawful gun owners would be protecting a crazy.
Or else become yet another mass shooter thanks to crappy US gun laws.
Or as one person commented on Facebook:
Those who kill only create martyrs.

But only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun! So clearly what was necessary was for pro-Sarkaasian partisans to also show up armed, and then we could have a multi-way shoot-out in a crowded auditorium. Freedom! To be honest, guns don't guarantee freedom--they never have. What guarantees freedom are people who are willing to speak out, especially if what they say is unpopular.

Elizabeth Warren on Guns
Extend the federal assault weapons ban
Warren's positions are largely in line with those of gun-control advocates, while Brown had long been endorsed by gun rights groups until he recently broke rank on a high-profile issue.
The candidates are most sharply divided about whether to renew the federal assault weapons ban, with Warren supporting an extension of the ban that expired in 2004 & Brown saying it is an issue best left to the states. Warren's campaign said she also supports proposals to require more rigorous background screenings, including for people who purchase firearms at gun shows; and opposes limits on the sharing of firearms trace information.
"There is a huge difference between the guns of a sportsman or homeowner and high-powered assault weapons with 100-cartridge magazines," she said. "I grew up around guns & gun owners, and I will work to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens. But the law must reflect the reality that, in the wrong hands, guns can be used for violent crimes, making neighborhoods less safe."
Supports gun control
Warren staked out traditional liberal Democratic positions on several big issues: She supports abortion rights, gun control, and gay marriage, but she opposes casinos. But she declined to offer specifics on where she differs with Brown or Obama.
Voted YES on banning high-capacity magazines of over 10 bullets.
Congressional Summary:- The term 'large capacity ammunition feeding device' means a magazine or similar device that has an overall capacity of more than 10 rounds of ammunition
- It shall be unlawful for a person to import, sell, manufacture, or possess a large capacity ammunition feeding device.
- Shall not apply to the possession of any large capacity ammunition feeding device otherwise lawfully possessed before 2013.
- Shall not apply to qualified or retired law enforcement officers.
Proponent's Argument for voting Yes: Sen. BLUMENTHAL: This amendment would ban high-capacity magazines which are used to kill more people more quickly and, in fact, have been used in more than half the mass shootings since 1982. I ask my colleagues to listen to law enforcement, their police, prosecutors who are outgunned by criminals who use these high-capacity magazines. I ask that my colleagues also listen to the families of those killed by people who used a high-capacity magazine.
Opponent's Argument for voting No: Sen. GRASSLEY. I oppose the amendment. In 2004, which is the last time we had the large-capacity magazine ban, a Department of Justice study found no evidence banning such magazines has led to a reduction in gun violence. The study also concluded it is not clear how often the outcomes of the gun attack depend on the ability of offenders to fire more than 10 shots without reloading. Secondly, there is no evidence banning these magazines has reduced the deaths from gun crimes. In fact, when the previous ban was in effect, a higher percentage of gun crime victims were killed or wounded than before it was adopted. Additionally, tens of millions of these magazines have been lawfully owned in this country for decades. They are in common use, not unusually dangerous, and used by law-abiding citizens in self-defense, as in the case of law enforcement.
Warren says, "Warren (D-MA)"
Supports restricting the Second Amendment.
Warren supports the CC Voters Guide question on the Second Amendment
Christian Coalition publishes a number of special voter educational materials including the Christian Coalition Voter Guides, which provide voters with critical information about where candidates stand on important faith and family issues. The Christian Coalition Voters Guide summarizes candidate stances on the following topic: "Further restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms"
Ban large-capacity ammunition.
Warren co-sponsored Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act
Amends the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act
- to prohibit the transfer or possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device, except for its lawful possession within the United States on or before the date of this Act's enactment; and
- the importation or bringing into the United States of such a device (with some exceptions).
- Identification Markings: Requires a large capacity ammunition feeding device manufactured after this Act's enactment to be identified by a serial number that clearly shows that the device was manufactured after enactment.
- Whoever knowingly violates this law shall be fined, imprisoned not more than 10 years, or both.

North Carolina State Trooper Charged with Misdemeanor
Benjamin Davis
Local news reports
A state trooper was arrested and suspended after he allegedly accidentally shot a vehicle in a campground and hit a man inside it while hunting off-duty, police said.
The man inside the camper suffered a minor bruise to a leg in the Monday morning incident off East Schroon River Road, according to State Police.
Police determined that Benjamin Davis, 37, of Queensbury, fired the shot that went into the camper, and fired a second shot near the camper as well while hunting, police said.
Davis was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, and the violation of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, police said.
He was released pending prosecution in Warrensburg Town Court, and has been suspended as State Police and the state Department of Environmental Conservation investigate the incident. He is a 14-year veteran of the State Police.
A Police Shooting in Rural China
From the Washington Post via Opinione
Luokan is an isolated village. With few jobs, most here get by on low-paying work in surrounding counties.
The closest airport is in the equally impoverished city of Zhaotong. From there, it takes a six-hour drive through treacherous mountains followed by an hour-and-a-half hike up a single-lane dirt road to get here.
The road has been heavily monitored of late by local police, ever since they killed Fang Jiushu on May 15.
The shooting occurred in the town square in front of hundreds of witnesses on the busiest market day of the week, according to villagers. Yet few today are willing to even say Fang’s name in public.
Several Luokan residents — approached by a foreign journalist who had snuck into their village under the cover of night a few weeks after the shooting — refused to talk. Fang’s friends and relatives were similarly reluctant, believing their phones to be tapped and their houses watched by informants.
Since Fang’s death, they said, government officials have visited many homes, warning all not to talk to outsiders.
But over the course of a night in secret interviews inside their homes, more than a dozen villagers gave their account of the shooting.
And their testimonies, coupled with cellphone pictures they provided of the shooting, contradict many aspects of the government account.

Serious ignorance
From Facebook:
I'm not sure if this is serious stupidity or rampant ignorance since pretty much everybody knows it is the US CONSTITUTION that begins "We the people.."
Well, everybody except this idiot.
The Phrase "we the people" is totally absent from the Declaration of Independence.
Which would be something this person would know if he actually read either document, which he obviously hasn't.
Neither has he understood either one for their historic and legal significance. And I am not patient enough to try to educate this person since he is a lost cause for any intellectual pursuit.
I would be pretty sure that things like ablative absolutes would seriously go well beyond this person's intellectual capacity.
Again, why I don't bother with the average gun loon. This clown is pretty typical for the intellectual level of a gunloon.
Of course, Gunloons will more than eagerly foist their ignorance upon one.
Ignorance isn't bliss: it's really fucking annoying.

So apparently, back in the late ’80s, a guy by the name of Todd Graham put together this Winnie the Pooh/”Apocalypse Now” short and shared it via VHS tape.
It was an underground hit and went what people would call viral today, circulating at comic conventions. Graham called his work style “telejusting” although most people would call it a mashup or a remix now.
With VHS defunct and all, politicalremix archived it on YouTube for the world to see it again.

Support has dipped but Initiative 594, which would close the “gun show loophole,” is holding onto a 60 percent support and a two-to-one lead among Washington voters, according to a new statewide Elway Poll.
Support for a rival measure backed by the gun lobby, I-591, has plummeted in the poll and now stands at only 39 percent. Forty-four percent of those surveyed said they oppose the measure.
I wonder if the crybaby gun-rights fanatics who scoffed at the 90% poll numbers will accept this one as valid.
In California, Woman Injured at Gun Range - Dropped Bullet Discharge
The Sentinal
The Kings County Sheriff’s Office said a 48-year-old woman suffered a bullet wound Sunday following an accident at the Lemoore Sportsman’s Club shooting range.
Maria Ramos was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno after a .22-caliber rim-fire bullet hit the upper portion of her right leg. Deputies say she is currently in stable condition and expected to recover.
When deputies arrived, they learned that Ramos had placed a live .22-caliber bullet onto a table. The bullet reportedly fell off the table and onto the concrete, ultimately causing it to discharge toward the victim’s leg.
Deputies said it appeared that the victim was practicing good gun safety.
Is such a thing even possible? It's a new one on me. I suppose the woman "was practicing good gun safety" but bad bullet safety.

Washington Voters to Choose - Background Checks on Private Sales - Or Not
Local news reports
Voting begins this week to decide a long-brewing duel of ballot measures involving guns — one to require background checks on the buyers involved in nearly every weapon sale in the state, the other to block expansion of existing law.
In all, more than $10 million is being spent in the nation's only electoral combat between backers of gun rights and gun control this year.
Most of the money, and nearly all the attention, is on Initiative 594, which would expand state law to require background checks on private sales of firearms, such as transactions conducted online and at gun shows.
Just above this measure on the ballot is Initiative 591, which would bar the state from enacting rules on background checks that exceed the requirements of federal law.
In other words, it would prevent everything that I-594 sets out to do.
State and federal laws require background checks to buy a pistol and other types of guns from federally licensed firearms dealers but are silent on purchases from private sellers.
Initiative 594 sponsors say that the unregulated private market is where criminals and those barred from buying a weapon — because of a mental illness or a domestic-violence protective order — do their shopping.
Closing what they deem a loophole in the law will make it harder for felons and other potentially dangerous people to evade a background checks and obtain guns, said Geoff Potter of the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility, the committee conducting the pro-594 campaign.
If passed, I-594 won't prevent people from buying a gun online or at a private gun show, said Kristin Meilicke, of Edmonds, at an Edmonds City Council hearing on Tuesday.

Toy Gun or Real Gun? Wal-Mart Fatal Shooting has Ohio Lawmaker Inspired
Protesters rally in Beavercreek earlier this week following the shooting death of John Crawford III by police last month. Republican Rep. Rick Perales of Beavercreek told The Dayton Daily News he is open to ideas about preventing incidents like the Aug. 5 shooting in his hometown.
A special grand jury in the racially charged case has decided that the Beavercreek police officers' actions were justified. Police responded to a 911 call that a man was waving what appeared to be a rifle. Officers have said John Crawford III, who was black, was shot after he didn't respond to repeated commands to drop his weapon.
It turned out to be an air rifle. Crawford, 22, had been talking on a cellphone and carrying the air rifle he picked up from a shelf as he walked through the store.
The newspaper reports that there are no state regulations for the use and sale of air rifles, BB guns and others that resemble deadly rifles. Federal rules require airsoft guns -- which are different from air rifles -- to be sold with an orange tip to avoid confusion with real guns. But that regulation does not apply to BB or pellet guns.
Republican Rep. Wes Retherford of Hamilton called the Wal-Mart incident in Beavercreek an "isolated" event. He said the private sector should decide how to package and sell such merchandise.
"If we're going to start locking everything up that poses a potential risk, that would be a lot more items locked up than just a BB gun," Retherford told the newspaper. "Eventually, you're going to be locking up everything in the store."

Michelle Montgomery, Utah Teacher Whose Gun Accidentally Fired in Bathroom Charged with Misdemeanor, Resigns
Local news reports
A Utah teacher who was injured by fragments from a bullet and a porcelain toilet when her gun accidentally went off in a faculty bathroom at an elementary school has been charged with a misdemeanor and resigned from her job.
The charges came earlier this month after she changed her story about what happened in the Sept. 11 shooting. Detectives had confronted her about discrepancies, charging documents show.
Michelle Montgomery, 39, was charged earlier this month with discharge of a firearm in a prohibited area within city limits, court records show. She is scheduled to be in court on Nov. 5 for a pretrial conference.
She first told investigators that her gun accidentally went off when it was in her holster while she was in the bathroom stall, charging documents show.
However, that story didn't jibe with evidence gathered from the scene.
At a second interview, detectives confronted her about the inconsistencies, and she provided a new account. Montgomery said she had put the gun on top of the toilet paper dispenser. After she was done going to the bathroom, she grabbed the gun to put it back in her holster, but it slipped and went off, she told detectives according to the charging documents.
The bullet struck a toilet, causing it to explode, and fragments from the bullet and toilet struck her lower leg.
Montgomery was facing discipline for violating school policy but was not going to be fired, Horsley said. But on Thursday, Montgomery informed the district she would not be coming back to her position as a sixth-grade teacher at Westbrook Elementary School in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville.
She said she was taking another job closer to where she lives, Horsley said. Montgomery was a teacher at Westbrook for 14 years.
