‘Apocalypse Pooh’ by Todd Graham

So apparently, back in the late ’80s, a guy by the name of Todd Graham put together this Winnie the Pooh/”Apocalypse Now” short and shared it via VHS tape.

It was an underground hit and went what people would call viral today, circulating at comic conventions. Graham called his work style “telejusting” although most people would call it a mashup or a remix now.

With VHS defunct and all, politicalremix archived it on YouTube for the world to see it again.

Weinstein's "The Senator's Wife" Takes on the NRA

Hollywood heavyweight Harvey Weinstein has revealed plans to expose the National Rifle Association in a new movie starring Meryl Streep, saying "they're going to wish they weren't alive after I'm done with them”.

The Miramax Films and The Weinstein Company co-founder's straight-shooting comments went to air on Howard Stern's popular radio show in the US on Wednesday.

Weinstein has since confirmed to Deadline that the movie will be titled The Senator's Wife. Thewebsite reports that Weinstein will focus on the NRA's behind-the-scenes influence in Washington, which helped defeat a bill that would have secured tighter gun control in the US.

Weinstein is a known supporter of President Barak Obama, who tried to introduce the legislation following the shooting deaths at Sandy Hook Elementary School and Aurora theatre in 2012.

Weinstein told Stern the film wouldn't be a documentary but a “big movie like a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”, referring to the 1939 classic about one man's impact on a corrupt Washington.

Weinstein revealed his plans when Stern asked if he owned a gun.

“I never want to have a gun… I don't think we need guns in this country, and I hate it, and I think the NRA is a disaster area," Weinstein said.

“I shouldn't say this but I'll tell it to you Howard, I'm going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we're going to take this issue head on.”

Weinstein said the movie would do so much damage to gun manufacturers that their stocks would “crash and burn" upon its release.

Good movie which clearly depicts the mistake homeowners can make when faced with a break in. Whether you use a gun or a baseball bat, chasing the thief outside and striking him while he's running away is a mistake. But this first scene shows how easily it can happen.

Two Reflections on The Dawn of the Dead

In the great remake of Dawn of the Dead as well as in the original, the protagonists say things like, "let's just wait for someone to come and save us." These remarks come early in the story before it becomes all too clear that no one is coming.

I wondered if these films, and a number of others just like them, have contributed to the self-sufficient and survivalist mentality which many folks espouse today. Growing up with movies like this, especially as young impressionable people, could partly explain the attraction of the Libertarian philosophy which eschews dependence on the government.

Whether the attitudes of today's gun-rights extremists came as a result of these films or if the films came as a way of portraying these attitudes already present in the society, it doesn't matter.  What matters is they're ZOMBIE MOVIES, not reality.

Another reflection I had was, since we're going to take these films so seriously, the supposed instructions that police receive to always shoot COM, center of mass, is nonsense. So often I've questioned whether it was necessary for the cops to shoot someone in the chest rather than in an arm or leg.  Always the defenders of shooting people say they have to shoot center of mass otherwise it's too easy to miss.

Well, re-watching this great movie, I realized that's just not so. The heroes of the story discovered that they had to shoot the zombies in the head, only head shots would stop them from rising again.  And in the remake they didn't just rise again zombie-style, they jumped up and attacked furiously.

There was no COM injunction, there were just heads exploding one after the other, which is proof positive that the police don't have to kill people when they don't want to. Just like shooting zombies in the head, they could shoot that drunk and dangerous armed maniac in the shoulder of his shooting arm.

Iron Man II - A Metaphor

Part of the story in this wonderful film is that Tony Stark believes he's built a "weapon" so advanced and powerful that world peace will result. The problem is the bad guys already have the technology, so rather than world peace we get an escalation of hostilities. In the movie, the good guys prevail in the end, but that won't last.

It's an apt metaphor for our times, don't you think, from the warring nations and their billion-dollar stealth bombers, to the armed citizen who feel he needs a bit more than a handgun to defend his home.

This year was a good year for Neanderthals. Yes, they did go extinct about 30,000 years ago, but scientists now say their genes live on — in us.
Scientists also found a 40,000-year-old finger in a Siberian cave that apparently belonged to an unknown human-like creature. And hair from the corpse of a 4,000-year-old hunter revealed his blood type and a predisposition for baldness.

What made these discoveries possible was DNA, which is becoming biological science's window into the past.

This year a team of scientists brought together by the Max Planck Institute in Germany actually decoded the billions of DNA segments extracted from Neanderthal bones. It was the culmination of years of research into retrieving intact, ancient DNA from the bones of humans and their ancestors.

"We estimate that about one to four percent of the genetic ancestry of non-Africans is from Neanderthals," says David Reich, a geneticist from Harvard University and a member of the research team.

Which reminds me of this.
