Guns in Bars

Melissa McEwan had a few things to say about the New York Times article about "gun in bars."  I think she should start a gun control blog.

You know, I've never been afraid of being shot by a criminal, but I am scared as hell of being shot accidentally by some pants-shitting nincompoop who's been given the right to carry a concealed loaded weapon, and starts firing at the first sign of "danger." Yeesh.
I feel the same way. This is an increasing problem in the U.S.

What's your opinion?  Please leave a comment.

Really? Please cite the numerous bar shootings that have been taking place to support your "pants-shitting" claim, because I'm not seeing dozens (or even a very few) shootings taking places in bars every week. To quote you, MikeB, these are rarer than hens' teeth.

Where exactly has this been a problem, outside of her imagination?

  2. Mikey W: Shootings in and in the immediate vicinity of bars are a pretty common occurrence. Certainly, far more than the largely mythical DGU.

I suspect we'll see a big upswing in bar shootings and gun-related accidents.

We've been hearing this forever, every time pro-gun legislation makes it's way through. You guys sure are big on suspicions, but short on facts.

  4. Anon., when Jadefool's Biggest (Only?) Cheerleader refers to "an increasing problem in the U.S.," he means "an issue over which I think I can make an increasing amount of hay."

To him, increasing liberty is "an increasing problem."

  5. See, I knew “bar” was your side’s hysterical word. We’ll keep “ban”.

I’d ask Melissa which one happens more often; people being shot by criminals, or people being shot by “some pants-shitting nincompoop who's been given the right to carry a concealed loaded weapon, and starts firing at the first sign of danger.” Then I would suggest she make an appointment with a psychologist who specializes in misplaced phobias. Melissa doesn’t need to live her life in fear of either.

  6. Jadefool (Guy Cabot)says: "Shootings in and in the immediate vicinity of bars are a pretty common occurrence."

Show us. Show us all of the shootings in bars and near bars, then compare that number to shootings on campuses and near campuses. Also, compare those numbers to shootings at home (of the shooting victim) and near home. Please add an additional areas of concern, then compare those numbers as well.

    Remember to show your work.

Please, I would love to see this information, if it really is the common occurrence you claim.

Not Mike W, but Guy thinks I am.

  7. Melissa probably doesn't go to neighborhoods and associate with people who would likely be involved in crime. Just like the average gun owner, who continually talks about protecting himself, probably won't have to.

That means, it is more likely to be shot by “some pants-shitting nincompoop who's been given the right to carry a concealed loaded weapon, and starts firing at the first sign of danger.” or at lease it's a reasonable thing to worry about.

Yeah, because those criminal types never rob or steal from folks who have lots of stuff--they keep to their own neighborhoods & only steal from each other.
