Father-Son Murder-Suicide in Tennessee

 Local news reports

Alcorn County authorities say an 11-year-old boy they believe was shot by his father in a murder-suicide has died at a Memphis hospital.

Authorities found the boy with his father in an apartment in Farmington. Fifty-one-year-old Billy Loyd Jr. was dead and his son was wounded. The boy was sent to the Memphis hospital.

Authorities say Loyd had posted on Facebook that he was in financial trouble, feared he would be evicted and his son taken from him.
Some of the really biased gun defenders would say ole Billy Loyd was perfectly within his rights to take his own life, but even they would draw the line at taking the boy with him - at least I hope so.

I say that Billy was an unfit gun owner, like so many.  His thinking was not healthy enough to safely own and use guns, like so many. He was a danger to himself and others, like so many.

  1. Don't you see the danger in what you just said? Do you really want the government to monitor the thoughts of citizens? He was wrong to kill his son. There's no doubt or controversy in that. But a government that can peer into our minds to decide who's at risk is far more frightening than any scenario of gun death that you name.

  2. Who amongst us commentators are unfit gun owners? There are so many (you say half), that surely some of us must not pass your feelings test. You know a lot more about our thoughts than Billy Loyd’s, so which ones?

    1. How the hell would I know, TS. Greg recently admitted he does home brewing, that sound a bit suspicious. How about you, do you have any secret activities that are incompatible with gun ownership?

    2. Admission implies that I've done something wrong. Secret implies that we hide things. Mikeb, you're the one who believes that gun owners must never have alcohol in their houses. We gun owners recognize that people are able to have complex and interesting lives without screwing up.

We believe that a person is a good citizen until proved otherwise. You suspect all Americans and want requirements for them to show themselves innocent.

  3. Well it is obvious after the fact that Billy was not fit to be walking around in public. Billy needed a custodian and a safe environment -- e.g. most likely a psych. hospital.

Even if firearms did not exist, Billy was a danger to himself and society.

    1. And is that a reason to make guns easily available to guys like him?
