Florida Concealed Carry on the Rise Especially among Women

Link to video
-(Ammoland.com)- More than 1 million Floridians have their concealed carry permit, but the gender and age bracket showing the largest increase might surprise you–it’s women 66 years of age and older.

Their numbers have jumped 619 percent since 2004, reports the Orlando Sentinel, and total nearly 35,000 individuals licensed to carry a firearm in the Sunshine State and 35 other states.

The Sentinel also reports that women in the youngest age bracket, 21 to 35, with pistol permits increased 463 percent to more than 40,000.

While gun ownership is up, the Sentinel reports violent crime in Florida has dropped nearly 60 percent in the last 20 years.

Looking at the way she handles the gun, does anyone really think she's safer armed? I don't think so.  This is the problem with the gun-rights movement and all the fear-mongering it depends upon. Many new gun owners are not physically and mentally capable of responsible gun handling.

Of course this matters not the the true believers.  They don't care if guns do more harm than good, as long as they themselves are not inconvenienced by any additional restrictions.

What's your opinion?  Please leave a comment.

  1. The article supports what we've been telling you for a long time, and the only thing you notice is how someone is holding a gun? Any comment on how you're wrong about the important facts?

  2. Mike, This post is why we will never submit to a "may issue" scheme that might ever put someone like you in charge of determining who is qualified to own a gun and who isn't.

What, pray tell, did she do so wrong? Her grip was good, she was steady. She had good trigger discipline, even removing her finger from the trigger between shots, etc. If your problem is because she's overweight or because she was making a face (one indicative of concentration and aiming with one eye), then grow the fuck up.

The only other thing I can think of that you might be picking at is that her manipulations of the gun were not as smooth and practiced as you'd like, and that she was using two hands to handle it while ejecting the spent magazine and reloading, etc. Big freaking deal. She's a little old lady with small hands, and a bit of age on her which probably limits her dexterity. She's not going to keep up at a competition, but there was nothing to disqualify her from ownership. She was doing a great job of keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction, even as she was handling it this way.

    1. Actually, you're far more biased than I am - in the other direction. That lady is no where near being able to safely handle a gun. The training requirements should be such that facility and confidence in the handling of a gun is achieved. She has a long way to go, and until she gets there she's a danger to herself and others.

And the joke is she probably has no need of a gun anyway. She's been frightened by the news and the gun-rights extremists into thinking, mistakenly, that she's better off with one.

    2. Because you're known for your knowledge about guns and gun handling, Mikeb?

    3. I saw someone with arthritis limiting her dexterity handling a gun with confidence and all the facility she could reasonably be expected to have.

Your requirements would leave the young and strong armed (provided they could jump through your hoops) and disarm elderly people who are far more vulnerable to burglars and muggers.

The fact that this woman, who was doing a good job with that .22, gets such strong disapproval from you is just another reason why we fight tooth and nail against any of your suggestions on ownership standards for guns--they're ridiculously strict and arbitrary, in addition to being unconstitutional.

  3. And by the way, why didn't you accuse this article of lying? After all, you've said that we're lying about all of the women getting involved in shooting. You've said it can't be happening--that it's a FACT that fewer women own guns.

Is Florida just an outlier, or is it possible that you're wrong about women just like you were wrong about the tales of the NRA's demise?

    1. The fact that women in different age groups are buying guns and getting concealed carry licenses in greater numbers is not to say that they make up a significant portion of gun owners overall. They used to be so few they were insignificant, now there slightly more than that.

    2. Keep believing that, Mikeb. You'll feel better if you do.

      Let's see--"more than" insignificant would be . . . significant, wouldn't it?

    4. You keep racking up those victorys [sic], Kurt. They add up.

What was once insignificant is now slightly less insignificant. What's your opinion, that there's a real gender balance happening in the gun world?

    5. What's your opinion, that there's a real gender balance happening in the gun world?

I don't care. I don't obsess over gender, race, religion, sexual preference, etc., like so many "gun control" advocates do. I don't see the relevance.

    6. We've told you that it's becoming more balanced, and you've denied it. However, we're part of the community. You have nothing to do with the gun community and are overseas. I think we're in a better position to see and comment on the increasing numbers of women with guns, carry permits, etc. Before this article, you accused us of lying and exaggerating, but this article is just one of many that shows huge increases in the number of women buying and carrying guns.

    7. This article doesn't really say much about how big a proportion is made up of women overall. It talks about the increase of women today compared to in the past. It's still a boys club. Why do you deny it?

    8. I said it's becoming MORE balanced--not that it is balanced already or that there are more women. When there's a 600+ percent increase in females getting permits, it would seem a fair guess to say that the proportion of women to men is becoming more balanced--something we've been seeing and reporting happening over the past few years.

  4. If you think her gun handling if iffy, wait til you see her try and fend off a 200lb assailant unarmed.
