Some Colorado Sheriffs Object to Obama's Theatrics

From the Trenches

With President Obama’s visit to Colorado to rally support for gun control measures, some of the state’s sheriffs are speaking out against more restrictions.

More than a dozen sheriffs held a press conference Wednesday in a Denver park near where the president met with law enforcement and community leaders to discuss the gun control package recently signed into law by Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Justin Smith of Larimer County was among sheriffs who gathered in advance of Obama’s visit. He and other sheriffs are slamming new regulations on firearms as unconstitutional.

Smith dismissed Obama’s visit as “a slap in the face to all Coloradans.”

That sounds about right. A dozen or so sheriffs speaking as if they represent all.  That's about the same proportion we have when gun-rights fanatics speak for all gun owners.

  1. Sheriffs are elected officials. Why would you have a problem if they speak as if they represent their constituents? If the people in the counties that those Sheriffs protect don't like what the Sheriffs say, the Sheriffs won't be reelected. Or is the statement "elections have consequences" only applicable when the consequences are in your favor?

    1. Aren't all the officers who work for the Sheriff's Department referred to as sheriffs?

As far as elections go, the people who keep resisting reasonable gun control laws will be re-elected less and less. That applies to the Rand Pauls as well as the country bumpkin sheriffs.

    2. I love how you pull arguments out of your ass, Mike! The elected Sheriff is the sheriff. Everyone else are deputies or staff.

Oh, and keep calling us all country bumpo ensure that the people stay united against you.

    3. Mikeb, here's another reason why I called you contemptable. You have so much hatred for people who aren't like you.

    4. If you think that's hatred, you don't have a very good imagination.

    5. You view people who aren't big-city-dwelling sophisticates as the vast unwashed. If I used the same terms against blacks that you use against much of America, you'd call me a racist--rightly so.

  2. Colorado has sixty-four counties. More than a dozen sheriffs means that the elected representatives of about one fifth of the state declared themselves against Obama's schemes. That's a large sample of the total. But hey, at least you agree that Obama's visit was a slap in the face to the good citizens of the state.

Do keep believing that you have huge support on your side. That makes you less dangerous.

    1. Is there only one sheriff per county? Don't they use the word sheriff like cop?

    2. There's one sheriff and then there are all the deputies.
