South Dakota Woman Shoots Herself at the Gun Range by Accident

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s office says a 32-year-old woman shot herself in the ankle with a nine millimeter handgun yesterday afternoon at the Garretson Sportsman’s Club.
Captain Paul Niedringhaus says the woman was performing a move she learned in a self-defense course.  Niedringhaus say the move involves falling and firing from your back.
Niedringhaue says two witness confirm the victim was practicing the manuever when the shooting occured.  Authorities concluded that it was an accidental shooting.  Niedringhaus did not release the woman's name or her condition.  She was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment.
I wonder if she had a concealed carry permit.  I guess it doesn't matter since she's highly unlikely to be charged with a crime.
The gun-rights fanatics think this is normal behavior.  I think it's fantasy-dwelling playacting in which they pretend to kill bad guys. It's driven by a combination of fear and insecurity that I call grandiose victimism.

  1. Mikeb, here's a piece of information at no charge: Bad guys aren't made of paper, and they don't stand still at defined distances. Oooh, that's two pieces. Still no charge.

So tell us what your problem is with realistic training.

    1. What part of the training exercise requires aiming the gun at your foot and pulling the trigger?

This is gross negligence and extreme stupidity. Why do you justify it?

    2. You know that's not what I mean, and it's not what you meant. Practice must involve realistic scenarios. It's best to do the training with a realistic toy gun first, but accidents will happen. That's a part of life. Your insistence that gun owners achieve inhuman perfection is the gross stupidity here.

    3. Yes, "accidents will happen." So say all the insecure gun owners who figure one day they may need that excuse.

    4. No, it's a realistic assessment of human nature and a recognition that your vindictiveness is a disease.

  2. Self inflicted gunshot wounds actually happen regularly in law enforcement also. My guess is that the prosecutor will have a hard time finding a charge. She was at a place where shooting is allowed. She has already received self inflicted consequences in the form of monetary costs and a wound. Are you hoping they'll charge her with aggravated assault?

    1. I don't know what the charge should be. But someone who does this once, should never have another chance to repeat.

    2. It's such a pain not to be king, isn't it, Mikeb?
