A 9-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the face Wednesday night in Livingston, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Deputies described the shooting as “accidental.” Capt. B.J. Jones told the Sun-Star a round of bird shot struck the child on the right side of his face, close to his eye. Investigators do not believe the child suffered a “direct hit,” but stopped short of calling the it a grazing wound. He called the wound “serious.”
Jones said the victim’s 14-year-old brother was holding a break action .410, only capable of holding a single round.
“He had his finger on the trigger when the gun went off and the victim happened to be standing across from him,” Jones said in the news release.
“He then went and told his father as he knew the injury was serious,” Jones said. “The child was alert and talking while being treated by (emergency) personnel.”
Jones said family members are cooperating with investigators. He said deputies are still trying to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Yeah, we need a lengthy investigation to determine that the responsible adult allowed his underage sons access to a deadly weapon, one which even the older boy was not adequately trained to handle safely.
Dad should already be in jail.
Again we default to the dad. Mike, we've talked before about the reasons for arrest, and I'm not seeing the need. Neither parent is going anywhere. Both are likely camped out at the hospital. And of course we have absolutely no idea the circumstances of how the boy gained access to the shotgun.
ReplyDeleteCalifornia, the nirvana of gun control laws does have a child access prevention law and I'm sure charges will be forthcoming when the prosecutors have their stuff put together. If he had been arrested when this occurred, he would have been out before the weekend since they don't have charges filed yet.

I don't know why you have a fucking complex about California. But I'm here to tell you right now.
DeleteWe don't carry guns in California. We're not about killing people.
We could give a shit about gun laws. We lead the nation. The informed U.S.A. follows suit. The more laws restricting the use and possession of guns, not to mention, the questionable legality of murdering other people, the better. Guns are for killing people. We don't need to kill our fellow citizens in the U.S.A.
That said, guns are still legal and always will be. Only a super dickhead would say that guns need to be less controlled than they are in California. I could pay for a gun tomorrow morning and have it in my hands in three days. Why the hell would I do such an insane thing?
Why the hell would anybody in their right mind buy a gun for the express purpose of lethally defending their family in this, the land of plenty?
Out of your goddam mind.

Howdy FL, California does had a very low total number of carry permits issued in 2011. The number I've seen was a bit under 37,000. This was due to the discriminatory permit laws in the state. Since the 9th found in favor of carry of firearms for self defense, there has been a surge in people applying for carry permits,
"People are applying for concealed-weapon permits in droves in Orange County, after a federal court ruled Californians don’t have to justify their need for the permit.
In less than two weeks, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department has received more than 500 applications for concealed-weapon permits – about the same number of applications received in all of 2013.
“They’ve been absolutely inundated,” said Lt. Jeff Hallock about the personnel assigned to process the applications."

The total number of carry permits in Orange County in 2011 was listed as 649, so assuming that a good percentage of people aren't shelling out the money for fees and training if they're not qualified, Orange county is looking at at least a doubling of the number of carry permits in just this year.

FJ, I'm seeing a minimum ten days till whenever rule on the books in California. Is there a way to get around that somehow to make the three day thing work? For example, my carry permit can be used in lieu of the required waiting period and purchase permit required for handguns and military style semi autos.
"California law prohibits any licensed firearms dealer from transferring or delivering a firearm to a person within ten days of the latter of:
•The application to purchase the firearm;
•The submission of any correction to the application, after notice from the California Department of Justice (“DOJ”) that an application is inaccurate or incomplete to either identify the purchaser or the firearm to be transferred; or
•The submission of any fee required, after notice from DOJ that the required fee has not been transmitted."

ss, about the need to arrest the responsible person immediately, you're right when it's a nice, middle-class family the parents are both at the hospital. But we've posted stories about inner city broken homes in which the responsible parent took off after the shooting. What's fair for one is fair for the other. Irresponsible and negligent gun owners should be arrested immediately upon identifying them.
