Raw Story

An 80-year-old Long Beach man could be facing charges after admitting he shot a home intruder twice in the back, killing her, as she ran away and despite the fact that she told him she was pregnant.
Tom Greer returned to his home Tuesday to find it being ransacked by a man and a woman.
“I walked in on them,” Greer told KNBC. “And they jumped on me in the hallway.”
Greer said that he was tackled and thrown to the ground but managed to get his .22-caliber revolver and confronted them as they ransacked a safe containing cash.
Seeing the gun, the couple ran out of the house and started down an alley.
“The lady, she couldn’t run as fast as the man, so I shot her in the back twice,” Greer explained. “She’s dead, but he got away.”
“She says, ‘Don’t shoot me, I’m pregnant! I’m going to have a baby!’ And I shot her anyway,” Greer said.

Massad Ayoob on the Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground Laws

Notice how he conspicuously avoided any discussion of how we determine if the threat was what it was supposed to be when the criminal gets away or ends up dead. For Ayoob, and most of the gun-rights nuts, every gun owner is to be believed. I guess this is their extreme version of innocent until proven guilty. It's convenient for adding up the numbers and protecting each other, even when they do wrong.

Underlying this gun-rights extremism is the faulty premise that the gun owner's life is worth more than the other guy's.  Can you shoot someone for looking at you sideways?  Yes, absolutely, as long as afterwards you exaggerate just a tiny bit the look.  This, of course, goes hand in hand with the famous advice about center of mass.  Dead guys cannot tell us their side of things.

If you think that doesn't happen and if you think the increase in justifiable shootings has nothing to do with gun-rights fanatics like Ayoob preaching his bullshit, you'd be wrong, dead wrong.

A Montana homeowner is behind bars and facing a felony charge of deliberate homicide after he fatally shot a teen who he found in his garage early Sunday morning.
Twenty-nine-year old Markus Hendrik Kaarma appeared in a Missoula County Justice Court Monday afternoon, a local NBC affiliate reports.
Police were called to Kaarma’s house at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Apparently the homeowner found Diren Dede, 17, and another male inside his garage after he was alerted by an alarm.
Kaarma fired four shots from a shotgun, two of which struck Dede. The second intruder, who was later interviewed by the police, immediately fled the scene – unharmed – as soon as shots rang out.
When authorities arrived, they found Kaarma in front of the house with a woman, and Dede inside the garage. The teen later died from his injuries.
Police arrested Kaarma, but according to Missoula Police Sgt. Travis Welsh, “We wouldn’t arrest someone without probable cause that a crime had been committed.”
