The Republican Fear of Facts on Guns

The three rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination showed enough sense of responsibility in their debate on Saturday to freely discuss the nation’s epidemic of gun violence. Unfortunately, this was only half the debate voters deserve. The Republican candidates are callously ducking the issue. Among the recent casualties of such silence was a bill in Congress that would have lifted a ban on basic federal research into gun violence and its toll on public health.
For nearly two decades, Congress has banned needed research on gun violence by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last week, Congress, doing the bidding of the gun industry, quietly killed a provision in the omnibus spending bill that would have reversed that ban.
In so doing, it left intact an anti-science smoke screen that has helped the industry and its lobbyists deny and dispute the facts of the gun violence that takes more than 30,000 lives a year.
Imagine if the tobacco industry had been similarly favored by Congress with a ban on federal research about cigarette deaths. Imagine, too, if the auto industry had such a shield during the years when the government successfully fought unsafe cars in the cause of public health.

Alcohol's Role in Gun Violence

Set aside politics and posturing about gun violence in America and there is still one indisputable fact: Alcohol use plays a primary role in gun violence.
A startling 48 percent of homicide offenders were reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offense, and 37 percent were intoxicated, according to an analysis by University of North Carolina researchers who reviewed more than 23 independent studies examining 8,265 homicide offenders in nine countries.
In the United States, guns are the leading cause of homicide and suicide.
"Both acute alcohol intoxication and chronic alcohol misuse are strongly associated with risk for committing firearm violence, whether that violence is directed at others or at oneself," said Garen J. Wintemute, founding director of the Violence Prevention Research Program at the University of California, Davis.
He added that of the nearly 400,000 firearm-related U.S. deaths in 12 years, "it is probable that more than a third of these deaths involve alcohol."

California Man Gets 7 Years for the Accidental Shooting Death of His Sister

The murder charges for 21-year-old Raymond Bahena were dropped after he pleaded no contest to the involuntary manslaughter of his sister on Tuesday.
The June 11, 2014 death of 17-year-old mother of two Gloria Guzman began as a domestic disturbance between Guzman and her boyfriend. Witnesses said that during the altercation, Guzman picked up the phone to call her brother (Raymond Bahena).
Upon his arrival to the home on the 16000 block of Desert Sand Road, he was confronted by her boyfriend and his father. A verbal altercation ensued and guns were subsequently drawn. Shots were fired and Guzman was accidentally hit in the lower abdomen by a bullet shot by her brother. Bahena panicked and fled the scene, but later contacted family and decided to turn himself in.
When deputies arrived at the home Guzman and the father of her boyfriend both were suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to Victor Valley Global Medical Center where Guzman succumbed to her injuries shortly after. The injuries of the man were non-life-threatening in nature.
Bahena requested immediate sentencing and was sentenced to 7 years in prison to be served at Chino State Prison. He was credited for about a year and a half time served.

You lawful and responsible gun nuts continue to amaze and entertain (with your denial and bizarre justifications ). The poor kid lost his older sister to an accidental shooting and still his negligent parents allowed this to happen.
