A Promise Not Kept: Profits Over People

Via The MCA Blog

In early 2012, reports circulated detailing some of the profit-centered entitlement raids that occurred at Bain Capital under Republican Presidential nominee, Mitt Romney. The Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance became intrigued when asbestos industry defendants appeared on a list of these types of corporate liquidations and commissioned a three-month investigation of the company’s handling of GS Industries through journalist, Gary Cohn. What we uncovered is the true human tragedy of collateral damage stemming from this profit model. We found a community affected by decades of toxic exposure, gasping for breath while picking up the pieces among an uncertain future.

The Chris Cox Interview with Mitt Romney

via AmmoLand

This year’s election is going to define the future of our freedom, perhaps more than any other in our history. For gun owners, there are a number of areas crucial to the survival of our Second Amendment rights. That’s why I took the time to visit with Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee, to find out precisely where he stands on the issues of concern to gun owners.

Chris W. Cox: First, let me start with the most basic question of all. In the 2008 case District of Columbia v. Heller, and in the 2010 case McDonald v. City of Chicago, the U.S. Supreme Court —by a 5-4 majority— held that the Second Amendment guarantees the fundamental, individual right of all law-abiding Americans to keep and bear arms.
Do you agree that the Second Amendment protects a fundamental, individual right to own and use firearms for all lawful purposes?
Gov. Mitt Romney: Absolutely, and I was pleased when the Court finally rendered a clear and concise decision on this critical issue. The Second Amendment is essential to our free society. I strongly support the right of all law-abiding Americans to exercise their constitutionally protected right to own firearms and to use them for lawful purposes, including self-defense; the protection of family and property; hunting and recreational shooting.
Cox: Obviously, America’s 100 million gun owners are very concerned that their Second Amendment rights hang in the balance at the U.S. Supreme Court by just one vote. President Obama’s two nominees to the Court so far —Justices Sotomayor and Kagan— have a history of anti-gun opinions and activism. And some have predicted that if Barack Obama is re-elected, he may have the opportunity to nominate several more justices to the Court.
As president, if you had the opportunity, what type of individuals would you nominate to the Supreme Court? And which of the justices currently serving on the Court would you consider to be the best models of your judicial philosophy?
Gov. Romney: Chris, I believe the next president could indeed have the opportunity to shape the Court for decades to come, and that’s a key reason why the tens of millions of Americans who support the NRA should support my candidacy. My view of the Constitution is straightforward: Its words have meaning. The founders adopted a written constitution for a reason. They intended to limit the powers of government. The job of a judge is to enforce the Constitution’s restraints on government and, where the Constitution does not speak, to leave the governance of the nation to its elected representatives. I believe in the rule of law, and I will appoint wise, experienced and restrained judges who take seriously their oath to discharge their duties impartially in accordance with our Constitution and our laws—not their personal policy preferences.

The rest is as unsurprising as these typically political responses. But it's worth a read.

Why Romney Cannot Win

Paul Ryan still opposes abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health or life of the mother. Mitt Romney isn't willing to go that far, but he has supported a personhood amendment to the Constitution that would effectively make Ryan's position the inalterable law of the land. Here's what you need to know about abortion rights. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, John Roberts, and Antonin Scalia think Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood were wrongly decided and would overturn those cases. That would return the issue of abortion rights to the states, dozens of which are ready to ban the medical practice. There are five Justices who would vote to uphold Roe and Casey: Elena Kagan, Anthony Kennedy, Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Stephen Breyer.

Justice Ginsburg has only pledged to serve three more years. She's survived two battles with cancer, she's 81 years-old, and she recently fell and broke some ribs. If she cannot serve four more years, and Romney names her replacement, Roe and Casey will be overturned.
People probably think this outcome is unthinkable, but the modern Republican Party is a radical party. Look at Paul Ryan.

Chronicling Mitt's Mendacity

via The Maddow Blog where you'll find a wonderful list of Romney lies and deceptions.  I was most interested in the first three.

1. Speaking to the NRA, Romney said, "The Obama administration has decided that it has the power to mandate what Catholic charities, schools, and hospitals must cover in their insurance plans.... Here we are, just getting started with Obamacare, and the federal government is already dictating to religious groups on matters of doctrine and conscience."

In Massachusetts' governor for one term, Romney took the same position Obama has adopted. He somehow forgot to mention this.

2. Romney also told the NRA audience, "We need a president who will enforce current laws, not create new ones that only serve to burden lawful gun owners. President Obama has not, I will."

The grammar in this sentence makes it hard to understand, but the implication seems to be that Obama has created new restrictions on gun laws. That's a lie.

3. Romney also claims to be a "lifetime" member of the NRA.

In reality, Romney used to oppose the NRA, but became a "lifetime" member fairly recently by buying the honor from the group.
Those poor racist Obama haters, I almost feel sorry for them.

What's your opinion?  Does old Tricky Mitt even stand a chance?

Please leave a comment.

Romney at the NRA Convention Making Slick Willy Seem Like a Straight Shooter

Courting skeptical gun owners, Mitt Romney told a National Rifle Association convention that their rights are under assault from President Barack Obama’s administration and they must help block his re-election.

“We need a president who will enforce current laws, not create new ones that only serve to burden lawful gun owners. President Obama has not; I will,” the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said in St. Louis yesterday at a gathering organizers say will draw about 65,000 through the weekend.

“We need a president who will stand up for the rights of hunters, sportsmen and those who seek to protect their homes and their families,” he said. “President Obama has not; I will.”

“I’m not a big-game hunter,” he said. “I’ve made it very clear, I’ve always been a, if you will, a rodent and rabbit hunter all right? Small, small varmints, if you will. And I began when I was, oh, 15 or so, and have hunted those kinds of varmints since then -- more than two times. I also hunted quail in Georgia, so I’ve -- it’s not really big-game hunting, if you will, however. It’s not deer and large animals. But I’ve hunted a number of times of various types of small rodents.”
Just little varmints, to use a word that all North-easterners use daily, that's all he's killed.

Isn't such transparent fence-straddling offensive to both sides. Is that supposed to appease the real hunters while not totally putting off the animal rights folks?

This isn't even a smart strategy. If the racist white conservatives weren't so desperate to rid the country of Obama, this approach would be laughed at. It should be laughed at, it's pathetic.

Here's the test though. Are the NRA types as numerous as they say? I mean the ones completely under the ether? The convention is a gathering of 60,000 passionate members, but how representative are they of the whole?

I predict Obama by a landslide. What do you think?

Romney Pandering to the Gun Extremists

For Willard to stand there and thank this loon for saying that the federal government poses a physical threat to him and his family is truly appalling -- a dereliction of duty -- and should instantly disqualify him from the presidency. Seriously. The idea that you need to own a concealed weapon to fight off the FBI and ATF is beyond crazy -- it's black helicopter, Clinton-killed-Vince-Foster, McVeigh-Was-Right crazy.
