Guns in Bars: What Could Go Wrong?
Oklahoma,
where the shots come sweepin' down the plain:
According to witnesses, a dispute erupted over a pool game between two women.
The argument spilled into the parking lot.
In a release issued by the police department, Wendy Whisman, 40, of Guthrie, is accused of pulling out a .38 caliber handgun and firing several shots into the crowd.
Kathy Wigington, 36, and Gregory Martin, 27, were hit by the gunfire.
Wigington was struck in the neck and is currently listed in stable condition at a local hospital.
Martin was shot in the lower leg and was rushed into surgery.
Captain Obvious:
"Any time you mix alcohol and guns it could be deadly. We were very lucky someone in the crowd was not killed or an innocent person driving down SE 29th street didn't get shot," Chief Brandon Clabes said.
Captain Obvious further added, “a simple sign stating ‘no guns allowed’ could have prevented this whole tragedy.”
ReplyDeleteNot so obvious TS, as the etiquette question points out.
ReplyDeleteWhich right prevails: the right of the property owner to not have someone bring a firearm onto his property without permission?
Or someone's belief they can carry a firearm?
Even those who claim to be law abiding have shown that they don't care about property rights if they find them inconvenient.
Captain Obvious? I used to watch Blind Date with my Pacific Beach gal! You sentimental fool. That show was pretty funny.
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple of issues at play here behind the scrim. "No Weapons" policies, laws that prohibit the carrying of a firearm in a tavern; clearly these type of rules will be disobeyed by the darker, edgier members of our society. For those who would advocate the carrying of weapons in restaurants and bars, I really don't have too much to say. Go ahead and bring your gun into the taco bar to protect your family if you must. People in bars drink. What are you going to do? Bop in and order a milk and talk with your friend the bartender? Get serious.
The real problem is a culture in which it is considered normal or perhaps even de riguer to carry a gun in a purse or in a coat pocket or in a vehicle. Guns are for killing people. The chances of having your gun in your hand ready for a DGU when a criminal surprises you with a criminal action are between .0001% and .001%. It may be useful to keep a gun handy in certain circumstances, but at a public watering hole or eatery where people have gathered to have a good time is not one of them. If some dickhead pulls a gun on you, just give him your money. Believe me, it's cheaper in the long run. Guns and alcohol do not mix, never will.
I like that.
ReplyDelete"the darker, edgier members of our society"
I call them the Famous 10%.
Captain Obvious would point out that the proximity of alcohol has a way of leading to tragedy when mixed with firearms. Guns and alcohol don't mix. Laws allowing guns in bars are asking for death, and is irresponsible.
