Accidental Shooting of Pre-teen CA Girl - Investigation Ongoing

Local news reports

Authorities say an 11-year-old girl is in condition after she was accidentally shot by a 12-year-old boy in San Bernardino County.

The sheriff's department says the shooting occurred Sunday in the San Bernardino Mountain community of Angelus Oaks.

Deputies were investigating how the boy got a hold of the gun and if the firearm had been properly stored.
Well, at least that's something. In California that take it seriously enough to actually have safe storage laws.

Any time a kid gets ahold of a gun, an adult gun owner should be held responsible.

It depends on the age of the child. At some age children are responsible enough to know not to play with firearms. More importantly, at some age children are responsible enough to be able to help defend themselves or their family with firearms in their home. It isn't hard to find news accounts of children as young as 10 years old who have successfully defended themselves or family members with firearms in their homes.

The real question should revolve around determining at what age a child is responsible enough. My first thought is that most children would be responsible enough around age 11 or 12.

    1. Yeah, sure, we should just try the 11-year-old offenders as adults and give their dads a pass.
