Rand Paul's Filibuster

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s threat to filibuster any new gun restrictions is gathering steam, as a dozen of his Republican colleagues have now signed onto his plan.

The Kentucky Republican and Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) first wrote to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid late last month to warn him of their intention to try to tie up the Senate if, as planned, Reid moved forward with legislation that would expand background checks and attempt to crack down on interstate gun trafficking.

Reid is expected to bring a gun-control bill to the floor as early as next week, or perhaps the following week, and Paul is renewing his vow to try to block the measure. Paul’s follow-up letter, obtained by POLITICO, bears Monday’s date and is signed by 13 Republicans, including fellow potential 2016 presidential aspirant Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) — who signed on shortly after Paul’s first threat was issued — and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Jerry Moran of Kansas.
All right, here's what's going to happen. Regardless of what gun control legislation passes this year, there will be a gradual tightening up of gun regulations over, say the next five or ten years. Those politicians who fail to support them, and especially those who fanatically oppose them with tricky stunts like filibuster, will pay in the polls. With each election fewer and fewer of them will be re-elected, making the chances of better laws more and more possible.

  1. Suuure. And then we have this.

You can spout all the wishful thinking you want. I do not believe there is any way something like that could happen in 5 to 10 years. With the abysmal state of our Education system (which is more like an indoctrination system), you might have a chance to get what you want in 20 years. Maybe. If you can get enough of the young voters to focus over the long haul. Heh. Good luck with that.

  2. Ah--my favorite Senator (favorite congressman in either chamber, really). And before the Rand Paul haters (a certain herbivore, perhaps?) get all excited, I'm not referring to Sen. Paul.

Nope--my favorite congressman is Senator Phil E. Buster. Anything that slows down Congress's imposition of more and more laws, its theft of more and more freedom (whether pertaining to guns or not)--is something for decent Americans to celebrate.

  3. It's fun to watch others suffering from delusions--so long as they have no power. Mikeb, you really don't pay attention to America, do you. The divisions between leftist enclaves and the rest of the country are being more sharply drawn. I do sincerely wish that your side would stop pushing gun control. There are some good ideas on the left that would be an increase in freedom for all of us, but the more you demand useless things like gun control, the less cooperation is possible on anything.

    1. It shall be a joyous occasion when the U.S. has rid itself of the burdensome debate inherent in an multiple-party system.

Unfortunately for thee, that day will never be brought by domestic means.

We circle above the dying beast, waiting to resurrect our empire from the ashes of the fallen America.

    4. How dare you, a commoner, insult the Dear Leader and masquerade as our Brother Number One, in a futile attempt to support your depraved goals.

    5. New Red you are siding with the wrong person! Our Brother Number One truly hates Alec Baldwin and all of the other worthless radish reds in Hollywood. They have proved worthless in moving our glorious revolution forward.

The fake E.N. who posted third is trying to keep our comrades linked to these fake reds in Hollywood who are really white capitalists infiltrating our movement! They are seeking to destroy it through their decadent ways--fornicating left and right, introducing disease to the true members of our cause; polluting our precious bodily fluids with their capitalism!

  4. I would call this wishful thinking, but I think that's too nice. This reads more like willful self delusion. Stop taking E.N.'s meds.

    1. E.N.'s insanity comes in many shapes, sizes, and flavors. It is no secret that Mikeb is just one of many.
