Quote of the day

In response to someone's comment about what movie goes through the minds of people who walk around carrying guns in public:
I think it's Dirty Harry goes to West Africa:
Bad Guy: "you feeling lucky, punk?"
Gun Carrier "Yes, I have my magic ju-ju gun which will keep me safe and make me a hero."

  1. Or maybe the gun is carried by a 100 lb nurse (me) who has to take the 2AM bus home from the downtown ED without getting raped. Laci, you are clouded by white male 1%er privilege.

    1. How many times have you had to use your gun to protect yourself from rape?

    2. MikeB, how many times have you been a victim of gun violence? The implication in your question is, if she hasn't needed to use a gun to protect herself from rape she doesn't need a gun to protect herself from rape. I hope to God she never has too but if she does I pray she is able to. And that's what you don't seem to get. You seem to believe that passing laws and advocating against guns will prevent anything and life doesn't work that way. Your response seems to indicate that you believe she should only be allowed to protect herself from what is already happening or has happened and by then it's too late. Based on much of what you say here as well as comments and posts by your co bloggers you clearly don't understand the mentality

    3. Mike, the sad truth is that she'll experience some kind of misuse of that gun before she ever has to use it for protection. Guns do more harm than good.

    4. While I disagree with your sentiment, I do see how you come to the conclusion and while misuse can cover a huge number of events, from drawing when it may not be necessary to a negligent discharge I do hope that she never has to use it for protection. Much the same way I hope I never have to use mine for protection. I carry on a daily basis for my employment. And the idea that guns do more harm than good is a difficult one to prove much like its difficult to prove that many gun laws work as advertised. Much as you ask in your response to her comment of how many times has she needed to use the gun, the saying of stopped or prevented an act is impossible to prove but it's also impossible to disprove. I have interviewed a number of gang bangers and other criminals and they have openly stated that they won't go after someone who they believe may be armed. And while I only speak for myself that fact alone leads me to advocate for carry. And while that may or may not, to your mind qualify as a defensive gun use, it is an important piece of info to keep in mind.

    5. Concealed carry would have no impact on the gang bangers. They would have no way of knowing the person is carrying.

    6. Notice I said may, IE in places where it easier for me abiding citizens to carry concealed. Logically if it's easier for a law abiding citizen to carry, more who wish to will. Which results in a greater chance of the law abiding citizen that the gang banger is thinking about attacking will be armed. So as I said, if they think the person may be armed they are less likely to go after them.
