With Charges Dropped, George Zimmerman Can Get All Of His Guns Back

Think Progress

On Wednesday, Florida state prosecution dropped the domestic violence charges against George Zimmerman from a November dispute with his girlfriend Samantha Scheibe. Because the charges were dropped, there are no legal barriers preventing Zimmerman from getting his firearms back. At the time of his arrest, Zimmerman had five guns and 100 rounds of ammunition. The guns included an AR-15 assault rifle, Keltec shotgun, and three handguns (the images depict similar models as Zimmerman’s):

  1. "A victims’ rights advocate suggested Scheibe may have been “manipulated” or “coerced” into recanting. Months prior, Zimmerman became a national news story for the second time when his wife Shellie Zimmerman called 911, claiming he had a gun. She, too, dropped the charges."

Or they may have both lied. Shellie's father was there at the time of the supposed threatening behavior, yet they both formally declined to press charges. And of course, Ms Scheibe was shopping for the highest bidder for an interview about her life with George.

In this country, everyone has the right to due process of law. No witnesses, and inadequate evidence means no conviction. Which means no rights lost. Yes, he gets his guns back. As for the 100 rounds of ammunition, all I can say is, totally inadequate, I recommend George run, not walk to Baldr's favorite store, Walmart, and buy more.

    2. Ours is not a perfect system, but it's the best we've got. Until a person has CONVICTIONS sufficient to deprive them of their gun rights, they continue to enjoy those rights. GZ is an example of someone benefiting from the system. But, his time will come.

  3. It's pretty obvious listening to the 911 tape. Zimmerman was pushing her out the door with a gun on her. Don't you remember? The guy is a psychotic liar. Calling 911 with the police barricaded? Completely bizarre.

She declined to press charges because she still thinks she can make it work with Zimmerman. She clearly feels that he is the right man to protect her. At least Shelley was strong enough to tell him to get out of her life. I feel very sorry for this poor woman. She is in grave danger by taking her chances with this murderer.

  4. Right. That's why the media is flooded with stories about the thousands of innocent people in jail, the innocent people put to death. I guess it's better to put innocent people in jail instead of the kill happy gun loons who keep shooting people and are not charged.

  5. Agreed, Flying Junior. I've been tangentially involved with a Womenspace, a shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence. The stories told by Scheibe and Z's ex-wife, and the way they dropped charges and returned to him, are all-too-common and eerily familiar. Too many women in such a position wind up being abused further, getting injured, and even getting killed (and the risk of being killed is far, far higher in homes with guns). In some states the police have the right to continue investigating, because of this. But, hey, this is the Gunshine State we're talking about here, where gun "rights" trump public safety.

The police tend to take felony aggravated assault very seriously, however, as in all criminal cases, in order to prosecute, they need evidence. None of the states that I know of require the victim's permission to prosecute.
In Shellie's case, she started changing her story right after the police arrived and she even had her father there. All the police needed was for one of the two to step up and George would have on his way to jail. It would be a safe bet that if there had been a gun visible, the father would have seen it too. They had no problem talking about a gun before the police arrived, so why change the story after they were safe?
As for Ms. Scheibe, I'm very skeptical of the wanting to be with George story. Don't forget, she and her mother were busy looking for the highest bidder for her story about what its like to live with her "love". The term opportunistic comes to mind.
And keep in mind, that in today's legal system, Shellie, or even her father could have easily gotten a protection order, especially with the lower burden of proof required , and then he would not have been allowed to posess any firearms at all.
Ms. Scheibe already had on in place, but she applied to have it removed, and the judge could have easily said no. One common theme I'm seeing is that both women quickly started changing their stories. One time this seems to happen is when someone is lying. As Mike mentioned in an earlier posting, the police tend to get ticked when they are lied to.
Keep in mind that we are talking about three grown adults, who get to own responsibility for their actions, or their lack of action.

  6. Here's a better question: why would Z take her back? Let's assume for a moment that he did nothing wrong, and Scheibe only wanted to be opportunistic. If she were really guilty of trying to cast Z in the light of being (again) a domestic abuser, both to the police and to the public, wouldn't that be reason enough to give her the boot from his life?? But if he's truly guilty, taking her back would help him save face a little.

  7. That's a good question Baldr. I would hope he would run away at top speed. I did a quick look and while I've seen many mentions quoting Scheibe with wanting him back, I haven't seen any statements from Zimmerman saying he felt the same way. Have you seen anything suggesting it?
If he does go back to her, he's even more nuts than she is.
