Gun Culture Out of Control

The New Haven Register published an op-ed about the latest mass shooting in Connecticut which expresses all the usual common sense, gun control ideas, many of which I say myself. The comments were fun, here are some of my favorites.

---Again, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE, guns don't go off by themselves. You MUST pull what's known as a TRIGGER.

---This argument is pushing me over the edge. I am about to stop shooting paper and go for a two year old.

---Bats and knives and hammers and arrows are a technology that allow people to kill people also, so what's your point?

---Typical progressive tripe, the author knew it and therefor hid their identity.

Why is it so often that an intelligent, well drafted essay about gun control, utilizing facts combined with common sense, is met with responses like this? One sympathetic commenter said it best.

As the total number of gun owners increases, the number of idiots who own guns will proportionally increase. That is simply one of the tradeoffs that will occur if our society chooses to be more gun-friendly.

The pro-gun people should simply acknowledge this fact and state that the trade-off is worth it. It's really pathetic and disingenuous how the pro-gun crowd tries to candy-coat this reality.

What's your opinion? Please leave a comment.

  1. Too bad the last commenter's statement has no basis in reality.

Bathtubs should no longer be allowed in building code. Every bathroom remodel should require the removal of the tub.

if it saves only one life. Think of the children!

Mandatory castration of parents who lose a child in a neglectful accident! Their other children should be put in foster care!

  2. Link is broken. But I'll put money down that like you and Jade the Author used very few facts and not an ounce of common sense.

Weer'd is correct. That article was totally devoid of facts and common sense. In fact, it really didn't say anything.

And as long as you want to quote from the comments section you should include this one:

"Unsigned article, with un-sourced statistics = credible story???"

I'll sum up the entire article:
If only there were no guns the world would be filled with hope, peace and rainbow farting unicorns.

    Typical liberal emotional hogwash.

  4. Thanks Weer'd for the headsup on the link. It must have been some pro-gun hacker went in there and messed something up. Either that or I did something wrong, which I doubt.

FWM, Don't you mean: "That article was totally devoid of facts and common sense, which support our side of the argument."

  5. No, what i think he meant was:
"That article was totally devoid of facts and common sense, which by default, supports our side of the argument."

  7. When a article like this comes out I always think to myself, "self, as a responsible legal gun owner who respects other peoples feelings, if this person was being attacked should you respect there beliefs and not reach to your hip to help them out if they are in danger?"

And the answer is always yes. Yes I should help them out. People who don't believe in guns should be aware that most legal gun owners purchase for there self-protection, hunting, and protection of loved ones and community. A few bad apples don't spoil the bunch. And Thorton was an extreme case and he simply lost a few screws and had a few wires crossed

LMAO! Yes, yes obviously some pro-gun hacker. Occam's got nothing on your superior reasoning skills!

  9. RuffRidr, I'm glad you had a laugh. I thought that was pretty funny.

Michaelg, yes indeed he's an extreme case. Let's say he's at one end of the spectrum and at the other end is the most responsible careful and intelligent gun owner imaginable. Somewhere in the middle is where we need to cut it off, man. Why do you guys in the good end of the spectrum object to that? And please don't trot out that old slippery-slope-eventual-gun-confiscation theory. We don't believe that one around here.

  10. "And please don't trot out that old slippery-slope-eventual-gun-confiscation theory. We (jadefool and MikeB) don't believe that one around here."

And we (everyone else) do believe it, because it has happened elsewhere. Hence the reasonable rejection of any and all attempts to add "just one more" to the list. You keep adding to the list for restrictions, and pretty soon only a few people will be allowed to own guns, which appears to be your goal.

Sorry, gonna have to fight that.
