Regarding the uselessness/usefulness of a concealed weapon in these circumstances, of course carrying won't protect you from an assassin. Someone who only wants to run up and kill you can always ambush you and take you out by surprise. The gun is not a talisman of protection.
However, what carrying a concealed weapon can do is help you protect yourself in other circumstances where one is afforded more reaction time.
One other thing about this video--I'm impressed as hell at the politician's reaction. He's shocked for a second, but then goes on the attack. That attitude, attitude of "Fuck you, I'm gonna live!" and of taking action quickly rather than being paralyzed is what is needed in dangerous situations, whether one is armed or not.
Oh you mean if someone sneaks up on you and shoots you in the head, you're at a disadvantage whether or not you have a CCW? That's some really amazing insight. Tell us more.
Are you saying that the would-be assassin carried his pistol openly? If he'd fired instead of hesitating, he'd have done the job.
Mikeb, you must have played too much Dungeons and Dragons as a youth. Guns aren't magical shields. They're tools. They improve the odds. We don't say that they're a guarantee. You're being deceptive by putting up a straw man argument here.
There certainly are situations where a criminal holds all the cards and concealed carry would be little if any help. In this case the victim (the speaker) reacted appropriately.
This is why I hedge my bets and train in martial arts in addition to carrying a concealed handgun. In any given situation, I may have to deflect an attacker's first move with my body. Even if an attacker shoots me in the chest and destroys my heart, I still have about 10 seconds to draw, fire, and put down that criminal to guarantee that he/she doesn't harm my family or anyone else.
Mike,

Agreed.
DeleteAbsolutely correct.
DeleteYeah useless, bet if a few of those angry old men had been concealed carriers he might have been shot in the face instead of kicked.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. Hot-headed guys with guns sometimes shoot people they're angry with. Is that an argument for your side?

ReplyDeleteIt goes a little bit beyond the sneaking assassin. Remember Loughner?

Why thank you Greg. You take me for a much younger man. When I was a youth, Dungeons and Dragons hadn't becone popular yet.
DeleteRoot cellars and salamanders, then?

Life is precious and precarious.
