arma virumque cano (et alia)
I don't see any child abuse at all. I see children learning how to shoot and be safe with firearms. Maybe your problem is that you know that once these kids learn that shooting can be safe and fun that they'll be less willing to take your side on gun control? Does that eat at you? I hope so.
You said it exactly right, shooting CAN BE safe and fun. Unfortunately as we both know, it isn't always.
Accidents can happen during any endeavor, getting out of bed can be just as dangerous..
god forbid the girl learns to defend herself huh?
How in the world is this child abuse? All I saw was children shooting some handguns in an extremely safe environment under close adult supervision. I observed safe handling and trigger finger discipline. For all you complain about firearms owners who are incompetent and lack proper training, you should be thrilled to see this MikeB ... that is unless you just don't want anyone to have firearms.
Well, I admit the title of the post is a bit facetious, but it's based on a simple fact. Guns do more harm than good, therefore teaching (brainwashing) kids at an impressionable age to like them is wrong. Do you really think all the people who have negligent discharges or who fuck up intentionally with guns never had safety training as kids? I don't. Most people who misuse guns on various ways grew up with guns. And the sad fact, in spite of your insistence to the contrary, guns do more harm than good.
"Guns do more harm than good," -- The facts do not support this assertion. You rely heavily on opinion and hyperbole.. feel free to stay away from firearms, and feel free to keep your opinions off of my rights.
Rev., I'm afraid you have it exactly backwards. All estimates of DGUs are made up of 90% or more hearsay. They're reported by the gun owners themselves over the telephone. You wanna talk about "opinion and hyperbole," there it is.On the other hand, gun violence is a matter of facts and statistics. You can look that up, 100s of thousands of gun violence incidents DOCUMENTED each year.
So when the Department of Justice came up with 108,000 defensive gun uses a year, that wasn't documented? That, against about a 100,000 total injuries and deaths, the majority of the latter being suicides.
Greg, the 108,000 used the same formula. Almost all of them were the brandishing kind - word of mouth, not documentation.Your 100,000 total injuries and deaths conveniently leaves out all the other crimes committed with guns each year. That total is about 300,000.So now we're talking about less than 100,000 compared to 300,000. You lose.
Brandishing is a crime. Showing a gun in a situation that justifies lethal force is self defense. The 108,000 number is the most conservative of reasonable estimates of annual defensive gun uses.
So, Mike, would it be safe to say you're willing to disregard ALL estimates?
No, not at all. But, estimates have to be taken with a grain of salt. They have to make sense. And they can't be confused with statistical records.
But your numbers make no sense to my side. Using your standard of reasoning, that proves that you're wrong.
Mikeb, I and others have shown you many times that guns do more good than harm--unless you're sympathies lie with bad guys. But your title is a blatant falsehood. Shame on you.
As a confirmed gun grabber, I have no problem with kids learning to shoot. In high school, I carried my grandfather's ancient .22 rifle to school on Weds and participated in Rifle Club. After high school, I discovered women, and guns lost all interest to me.
My first experience with guns was at summer camp. We fired .22 rifles at targets. I remember how much I loved the smell. That was in the late '50s. Lots of things have changed since then. In those growing up days of mine, practically everyone smoked and no one wore a seat belt in the car. We know better now. And teaching kids to like guns is sick.
You call a lot of things sick. I see the Oprahized version of human beings as sick.
You call two a lot?
I've seen you label gun shows as sick, hunting as sick, target shooting as sick. Now it's teaching children to shoot. What else?
I dare you to back that up. Otherwise I want an apology.

I do have a good memory.
Hunting is sick.Gun shows are sick.Target shooting is sick.Teaching kids to shoot is sick.I apologize for questioning your incredible memory and researching skills.I need to start using the on-line thesaurus.
