Eastern Florida State College Changes Gun Policy Following Shooting in Parking Lot

Eastern Florida State College has changed its policy to allow guns that are secured in cars following a shooting in the parking lot last week.
The school did not previously allow guns in cars, despite an appeals court ruling in December that recognized the students' right to have them.
Landrick Hamilton, 24, said he shot another man in self-defense as he was being attacked Thursday.
Amado Contreras, 25, was hospitalized in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the chest.
The new policy allowing guns has not been written yet, but it will apply only to cars in the parking lot, with the gun secure and out of sight.
Several students told WESH 2 News they support the policy change.
"I saw the guy getting beat down. The gun practically saved his life," said student Rio Gonzalez.

  1. Why did you tag this with "idiot gun nuts"? One student already saved his life with a firearm. I call that intelligent.

    1. Intelligent would be neither of the students having guns, idiot.

    2. At one point, there was only one pool cue and an extra assailant thrown in. Are you suggesting that the victim should have just taken the beating and counted on the attackers' moral fiber to stop short of serious injury or death?
Also, the two men attacking Hamilton weren't students.

    3. The response of the college is idiotic in my opinion. But you knew that. Are you trying to be tedious again?

    4. No, Mikeb, it's an honest question, since there's nothing idiotic about defending oneself.

    5. If they want to kill each other let them work for it. A gun is to easy and shows a lack of masculinity. A good physical fight to the finish will prove their toughness, not a simple pull of a trigger. What a wimp.

    6. Keeping guns in cars on a college campus is about as idiotic as you can get.

    7. Then the college should allow people with carry licenses to keep their guns on their persons.

    8. Yes, disgruntled students who feel the professor fucked them on their grade should be carrying in the classroom. That's pure genius.

    9. Given the age requirements and background checks for a carry license, it's much more likely that the professor will be the one carrying. And explain to me how a gun-free zone sign would stop a disgruntled student from carrying illegally.

    10. Nobody ever said signs would stop ALL wrongdoers from doing their thing. That's a straw man argument. What we do say is the presence of guns in the sometimes high-tempered academic environment would be a hindrance to the teaching and learning dialectic. Only fanatical gun nuts disagree.

    11. See, your error is in calling an academic environment "high-tempered." Things are a lot calmer than they were in the Vietnam era.

    13. No, Mikeb, most people aren't the collection of rage, irrationality, and irresponsibility that you believe them to be.

    14. Not surprising you gun loons don't understand the idea of keeping flames away from gasoline.
Irresponsible young people, drinking, fighting - just add a gun, no problem, in fact you say it's the best thing to do.

  2. Anon, I think you better reread the article because I don't think you have an understanding of the situation. Hamilton, a student at the school was attacked by two men, (not students) with a weapon, (pool cue) and defended himself with a firearm he was keeping legally in his vehicle.
Or are you really advocating that when an unarmed person is being attacked by multiple assailants with a weapon, they somehow should be obligated to engage in a "fair fight" to the death?

    1. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
