Southern Poverty Law Center has
a fascinating interactive map. Before clicking, guess which states have the most.
Many of these groups are armed to the teeth, but when talking about lawful gun owners who are responsible and make the world a safer place, they're not what we have in mind, are they?
And the winner is.......California! Flying Junior refers to California as god's country, and considering that many hate groups seem to think they have god on their side, be it Christian, Islam, or even Odin, perhaps there is something to what he says.
ReplyDeleteWhere's TS to point out that CA has the greatest population and therefore straight totals are deceiving. I would imagine our favorite southern states are the real winners.
DeleteYou would imagine? That's all you're going to say? Not even an attempt to do some analysis or answer my points?
DeleteCalifornia has the greatest population, therefore staright totals are deceiving.
DeleteSo Mike, you are saying that the Southern Poverty Law Center is being deliberately deceptive with this map, yes?
DeleteNo, where's their dishonesty? You're the one who was content to watch the discussion continue with totals rather than rates until I pointed it out. Normally, when it suits your argument, you're on the shit immediately.
DeleteMikeb, I'd already made the point below that the totals tended to follow the population of the state.
DeleteWhere's their dishonesty? Well, I've laid a bit of it out below.
DeleteWhat’s your obsession with immediacy? My response was the following day. This is like how you get all worked up when the police arrest some after an investigation instead of “immediately”. I didn’t give this thread any effort until you called me out by name. So what?
DeleteBut let me get this straight. Some poor lawyers from the south publish a study on hate groups by state using totals instead of rates. You repost it, content to participate (not just “watch” as you accused me of) in the discussion with totals rather than rates until Sarge pointed out that California has the highest total. And still somehow there is no blame for the poor lawyers who published it as totals in the first place. You look pretty silly when you stretch this hard.
What do you know--tolerant California has the most, and NY is way up there. Colorado, where you won some gun control is in the double digits while most of the more gun friendly states around it are in the single digits.
ReplyDeleteOh, did you want us to note some high numbers in the deep South? Because what I saw was that there were only three states down there that deviated from the normal range for most of the states of equivalent size east of the Mississippi. Clicking on those revealed that they had extra chapters of the KKK and friends which were counterbalanced by extra chapters of Nation of Islam, New Black Panthers, et al. (So it's not like the numbers are showing some increase in racist whites alone.) The numbers were further inflated by the inclusion of some churches and church groups whose only crime was believing homosexuality was sinful (along with promiscuity, etc.). These aren't groups calling for violence; just calling the action sinful.
Moreover, when I looked at my own state, I saw 10 chapters of the KKK listed--two were in towns I've lived in--one of which was small enough that I'd have heard of them if they were there, or at least if they did anything. My only conclusion can be that this data is either very old, or the chapter consists of a few anti-social dickheads who live in one of the two hollers nobody (and I mean nobody, whether white or black) goes to (other hollers there are fine).
Meanwhile, the two Klan groups I Have heard of in the state are not listed. One is a bunch of idiots who do nothing but get together and get drunk, and then get hustled at pool by their kids who hate them (brother went to college with the kids). The other is the big group in Newport--a place I avoid 'cause I hate nazis, Illinois and otherwise.
With such inaccurate information, I have to question whether any of SPLC's numbers are accurate.
Oddly, California has the most, and New York has a large number. I'm not seeing the pattern here, other than the fact that areas with more people tend to have more groups. Of course, the site calls the Nation of Islam a hate group, so who knows?
ReplyDeleteMore evidence of SPLC's dishonest exaggeration: Potok says that more than half of whites are racists--a patently ludicrous claim.

Kinda funny to see the person of color in the interview arguing that SPLC is skewing things for their own benefit. I guess I should be thankful Potok didn't call him an Oreo like I've heard many lily-white liberals call Clarence Thomas.
