Yahoo News reports

An assault weapons ban sought by President Barack Obama ran into serious trouble on Tuesday when Majority Leader Harry Reid acknowledged there was not enough support for it in the Senate.

It was the latest blow to the White House's gun control plans which are fading as Republicans and even some Democrats baulk at taking on the powerful gun lobby.

Less than half of the Senate backs the assault weapons ban, Reid said, which would condemn it to failure when gun control legislation comes to the floor of the chamber next month.

Prohibition on the sale of assault weapons was always the most controversial element of Obama's attempt to stem gun violence since December's massacre at a Connecticut school where 26 people died.
Backed by a lobbying campaign from the National Rifle Association, many lawmakers argue that bringing back a ban that ran out in 2004 infringes Americans' constitutional right to bear arms.

"Right now," Reid told reporters, the bill by Senator Dianne Feinstein to renew the ban "has less than 40 votes" in the 100-member chamber.
This is certainly no suprise, although a disappointment for sure. Maybe Obama needs to see the film Lincoln to learn how to make this happen.

What do you think?

I disagree with you on the second bit.

We warned you it wouldn't go far, and y'all didn't listen to us. I'll enjoy the tears of the gun grabbers for weeks to come

    1. What do you mean, didn't listen. I don't know any gun control person who thought it would pass.

    2. So you were all lying when you told supporters that you could win on it? And you were lying when you bragged that our days were numbered and we could say goodbye to our "assault weapons."

Nah, you thought, for a week or two, that you could get it passed. But then came the avalanche of sales, and those in DC realized that they would be in 94 all over again if they passed DiFi's POS.

  2. *happy dance*

So long to a steaming pile of crap. DiFi should have killed this abomination herself long ago, but she put it out there and showed us all how much she SUCKS at writing legislation. The woman is a failure, along with her whole staff.

I'm just glad that Harry put the penultimate stake in this legislative failure!

After a meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday, a frustrated Feinstein said she learned that the bill she sponsored — which bans 157 different models of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines — wouldn’t be part of a Democratic gun bill to be offered on the Senate floor. Instead, it can be offered as an amendment. But its exclusion from the package makes what was already an uphill battle an almost certain defeat.

Looks like Di Fi thought she was doing great, right until she got bitch-slapped by Harry Reid.....

  4. Unfortunately, it's not completely dead yet. I believe it could be offered as an amendment to a less controversial bill. As such, it could be included with a simple majority vote. Of course, that might doom the less controversial bill as well. While I want this bill, and those like it, to die a quick death, I'd be surprised if an effort wasn't made to include it in some other piece of legislation.

    1. That's why I said Harry put in the penultimate stake. Hopefully the final stake will be driven in by a down vote by the whole Senate, permanently crushing DiFi's hopes and dreams.

  6. With all your talk about how gun ownership is going down (despite a boom in sales), how does that jive with the obvious fact that gun control is harder to pass now than 20 years ago? Yeah, yeah, yeah, the NRA, but what's at the root of it? Why do they have more influence than 20 years ago?

    1. The gun manufacturers are behind the NRA. They're the real special interest with the power.

  7. Another funny little factoid...applications for gun permits in Newtown are more than double what they were the same time last year.

  8. Lincoln was acting to end slavery--a violation of basic rights--and to preserve the Union. Gun control freaks are acting to violate basic rights and tear the Union apart. The comparison would be?
