arma virumque cano (et alia)
Oy Vey! The people limit the number to Reported AND Verified DGU's and Mike still opines that the number must be too high because it doesn't fit what he expected.
Do you really think that crime magically stops by yourself? Are you stupid and naive enough to believe that REAL bad guys (not the ones that you kiddies see on Power Rangers) will just decide NOT to interrupt your sheepish little life with a robbery of whatever-nameless-retail-establishment-you-are-unfortunate-enough-to-frequent, shoot everyone to eliminate the possibility of witnesses, slit your throat, and sodomize you in broad daylight just for good measure, will spontaneously decide to just put aside their hell-bent ways and become boyscouts overnight? Do you really believe that hardened criminals who pack a sawn-off 10 gauge gangsta style on a daily basis will suddenly decide to put aside their rape-rob-& pillage ways practically overnight?????Hardened criminals respect one thing: force, and force has been dealt on the streets and malls of Chicago by a warrior so skillfully lethal that even his aliases have become legendary. Almost single-handedly I, the humble disciple of a Great and Infamous Master of the old world, have learned the oriental ancient techniques of Ninjutsu and adapted the mythical arts to adapt to the three-dimensional combat setting of a (nameless) urban retail establishment and to make the greatest use of a modern arsenal so lethal, that the mere knowledge of such is illegal for civilians. With the decay of society and the rotting away of the moral fiber of our country this world is getting more and more dangerous and down right mean. Who do you think protects you from the scum of this society??? The cops, the FBI, the army???Guess again, it’s the guys guarding your companies, your banks, your schools, your homes, your supermarkets, and yes smartass, even your malls. What good are the cops going to be if a shooter shows up at your workplace??? How about your kid’s school, remember Columbine? I’ll tell you what the cops will do, call the SWAT team and screw around trying to locate the front door for 30 minutes, while you or your children are shot down like prairie dogs at a drunken machinegun shoot. We are on site, when the cops are cruising around handing out speeding tickets or harrassing prostitutes. We risk our lives so you can go home to mommy at the end of the day and this is the respect we get??? Hell, I’d call some of us “heroes”, but I’m sure most of you juveniles don’t understand the meaning of such a Distinguished word.So go play Rainbow Six and frag some “tangos”, and tell your mommy to bring you some milk and cookies. Meanwhile, my ass is one the line so your fat butt can go to the mall and pick up the latest copy of “Computer Gaming Monthly” without getting jumped and sodomized in the mall bathroom.
Simon, you really need to lighten up. You should recognize my sense of humor by now. My remark about the DGU number was totally tongue-in-cheek. Don't you see how low it is? It actually comes out to just about what I've said in the past. When you remove all the nonsense ones like shooting at snakes, and then remove all the ones that were really aggressive and criminal and finally remove all the unnecessary ones, you've got about 500 a year that are true DGUs.
Perhaps if you didn't make so many ludicrous claims your attempts at humor wouldn't fall so flat.
As for how low it is, your suggestion that every case that hasn't been verified is a case of a criminal use by being either an aggressive assault or an unnecessary brandishing (which would also be classed, legally, as aggravated assault) or somehow doesn't count because it is defense against animals is just an unreasonable application of your bias.
"Perhaps if you didn't make so many ludicrous claims your attempts at humor wouldn't fall so flat."What you should have said was, "Oh, yeah, I missed that." But, you are incapable of taking responsibility for anything. It's always someone else's fault. I suppose you were too embarrassed to admit that you missed it. In your haste to attack what I said, you didn't notice that the number almost exactly represents what I expected. You said, "Mike still opines that the number must be too high because it doesn't fit what he expected." That's funny.
Kinda makes me think of the atheists in the Discworld universe.
It's easy for them to make such claims, but they're short on supporting evidence. That's a familiar characteristic of gun control freaks.
Fortunately for my limited math skills, we are at about 25% of the year complete so far. So the annual numbers come out as this,Deaths 9,584Injuries 15,632Children killed/injured 984Murder/suicide 488Armed robbery 10,000Officer involved shooting 1612Home invasion 1248Defensive gun uses 640 Obviously, they need to tweak their data collection a bit, since they seem to be reporting low on just about everything. It is a noble goal. Gun control advocates tend to just use the same number per day constant they have been using for several years when the numbers have been steadily declining over the long term. Mike, while you think the defensive gun use number is high, I would tend to think its low, just like all of the other numbers. The only place they would be able to get that data is from news sources. After all, anyone who reports that he used his firearm to defend themselves runs the risk, or is already undergoing scrutiny from law enforcement.
Where did your numbers come from?
The numbers in the posted chart represent numbers from about 25% of the current year. I took the numbers given and multiplied by 4 to get an estimate for the entire year. Granted, it will make the already low numbers lower than it should be considering that violence and crime are affected by weather. But it gives a ballpark number. It also illustrates how inaccurate it will be in regards to annual numbers when compared to CDC or FBI data.
TS, did you also think my remark was in earnest about the DGU numbers. I'm surprised at you.
Mikeb, we see your claims every day. We don't believe them.
That wasn't my comment. I would never say that my math skills are limited. ;)
