Iowa 'Fake Gun' Bill Debated by Officers, Senators

Local report with video

  1. "I would rather have the robber use a toy weapon every time. You're correct by that. But I'm going to qualify that by saying whether you use a real gun or a fake gun, you're going to illicit the same response by law enforcement regardless," said Marty Bilek, Mayor Jean Stothert's chief of staff."

And of course, the same would be true if an armed citizen is threatened in the same way,

"A thief carrying a toy gun was killed on Wednesday afternoon in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, after his would-be victim pulled a real gun on him.
Police say the 67-year-old victim, who has not been named, was walking on a path in a local park when he was approached by 18-year-old Tyler Williams, who tried to rob him, WPVI reports.
"He hears somebody running behind him. As he turns around, he sees a masked man with a gun pointed at him saying, 'Give it up, give me all you got,' " Superintendent Michael Chitwood told the TV station.
Instead of handing over his wallet, the victim pulled out his own .38-caliber handgun and fired at Williams, shooting him in the head, according to NBC. He died at the scene."

I've heard people call this, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I prefer a term used in a classic sci-fi novel I read once, "think of it as evolution in action"

    1. One gun rights advocate I know refers to the act of getting shot while trying to perpetrate a robbery (or some other crime) with a fake gun, as "winning a lead Oscar." I kinda like it.

  2. Yep--just look for the tag and the ruler, and you've spotted the fake.

    1. Just a joke (and yes--a fairly lame one). The pic of the fake gun has a tag hanging off the trigger guard, and there's a ruler just beneath the "gun."

  4. It's a little frightful to think of how realistic some of these fake guns look. Someone could even open a fake store to sell these to fake customers, claim they were used in famous killings, and then try to shame them for wanting to buy a gun for protection, and desseminate it on YouTube. Dangerous stuff.

    1. Actually the frightful thing is when a kid gets shot by the cops for having one of them - or when a bad guy uses one to commit a crime.

    2. Holy Cow, call ripleys, I actuakky agree with you in that one. You are correct that it is a scary terrible thing when a fake firearm is used in a crime it a kid gets shot when ones involved. But ts is also correct as your example is directly connected to theirs, not to mention now there are criminals building real guns to into fake ones and trying tomatoe their real guns look fake, in hopes of armed responders hesitating, which sadly makes your scenario more common.
