Anchorage Woman Charged in Boyfriend's Fatal Shooting

Bonnie Degenstein, 27, was arraigned Saturday in Anchorage, Alaska for second-degree murder. She called police Friday night and reported she had been drinking and playing with guns with her boyfriend when she shot him in the head.

Alaska Dispatch

Twenty-seven-year-old Bonnie Degenstein made her first court appearance Saturday afternoon at the Anchorage jail, less than a day after police arrested the woman on a second-degree murder charge following a 911 call to report she had accidentally shot her boyfriend.

Police say Degenstein called Anchorage Police Department dispatch at 10:16 p.m. Friday. She said she and Ryan Tamborrino, 24, had been drinking and "playing with a guns" at a residence near midtown and that she’d accidentally shot him.

Police responded and found Degenstein sitting on a couch just inside the front door of an upstairs apartment. Tamborrino was sitting on an adjacent couch. The wounded man was slumped over, bleeding profusely from his head but still breathing, the charges say. Tamborrino was transported to a local hospital; he died later of an apparent gunshot wound to his forehead.

A downstairs neighbor who told police the victim was his friend said he went to bed early and did not hear any gunshots. He also said he wasn’t aware of Tamborrino owning firearms. The witness's roommate told police he'd seen the couple fighting two days earlier. Tamborrino was allegedly yelling at Degenstein, who was standing outside the apartment, telling her she needed to leave.
The roommate offered Degenstein a ride home, and during the drive she said she'd been arguing with her boyfriend because she found out he was dating other girls.
Degenstein's next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 10.
Degenstein has one prior conviction, for drunk driving, received in 2012.

Indiana Lawful Gun Owner Shoots his Son Accidentally Outside Gun Shop

shooting
An accidental shooting last night in Vermillion County.
It happened in the parking lot of Darrel’s Custom Firearms in Cayuga around 7p.m.
Police say 20 year old William Simonton, of Newport, was accidentally shot in the leg by his father.
Apparently Charles Simonton had just purchased the gun and it discharged as he was leaning into his truck.
You realize dear old dad probably had a concealed carry permit. And if he did, he counts as one of the superior ones who commit fewer crimes than the rest of us. Part of the reason for that nonsense superior theory is that we take pointing a gun at an innocent and negligently pulling the trigger so lightly. This should be a crime.
They make all kind of excuses for each other, which is often reflected in the media description of events. Often the gun just went off. In this case it was the old "leaning into his truck" problem. Often they claim mechanical failure.
The truth is, guns shoot people when you point them at the person and pull the trigger. Doing this unintentionally should be a serious crime and a disqualifier for continued gun ownership.

David Carrender Shot And Killed Son Following Argument About Watching Football

David Carrender faces murder charges in the shooting death of his son

Huffington Post

Indiana police arrested David Carrender, 49, on Sunday after his 19-year-old son, Wyatt Carrender, was gunned down at the family home in Martinsville. Police said that the younger Carrender was shot six times by his father with a handgun following an argument about watching football on television.

I wouldn't be surprised if this dangerous gun owner had a concealed carry permit, since they're so easy to get. No one checked if he had one, any more than they checked if he had a fishing license or library card.

The other thing I'm not surprised about is this is not his first incident. A neighbor reported witnessing a scene in which Carrender pulled a gun illegally. That's the way it usually works. People who make the news with gun misuse are generally not first-time offenders.

The real question for me is this: who is more representative of of gun owners, a guy like this or the extremist gun-rights fanatics. I think it's the former, at least insofar as typical gun owners suffer from all the ills of modern society, stress, depression, excess drinking, drug abuse, problems with rage. The gun-rights advocates, on the other hand, adhere strictly to safety rules, but are only a tiny fraction of the whole.

Lawful California Gun Owner Shoots Through the Door During his Eviction - One Wounded

SF Gate

A 42-year-old man being evicted by Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies shot through the front door of a foreclosed home in an upscale gated community just outside San Ramon on Wednesday, hitting the property manager in the leg, before surrendering after a standoff, authorities said.
The incident began shortly before 2 p.m. at 3497 Ashbourne Circle in the Norris Canyon Estates development west of San Ramon, authorities said.
Sheriff's deputies, the property manager and a locksmith arrived at the home to evict the resident, but no one responded when the deputies repeatedly knocked on the door, said Jimmy Lee, a spokesman for the Contra Costa County sheriff's office, which patrols the unincorporated area.
As the locksmith began drilling out the lock, Lee said, someone fired shots through the closed front door of the five-bedroom, $1.6 million home, hitting the property manager in the leg.
