North Carolina Granddad Charged with 7-Year-old's Accidental Shooting Death

The grandfather of a 7-year-old boy was charged Friday with involuntary manslaughter after his grandson died from injuries in an apparent accidental shooting, police said.

David Nathaniel Richardson, 52, of the 2100 block of Hyde Place, also was charged with misdemeanor failure to secure a firearm, according to warrants.

The incident happened at the Hyde Place apartment about 4:20 p.m., said Lt. Todd Joyce, a Fayetteville Police spokesman.

The residence is in the New Colony Place apartment complex off Owen Drive.

Policed identified the victim as Jaylean Richardson.

Police say Jaylean was in a bedroom with other children when he discovered the rifle, according to a news release. At the time of the incident, Richardson was in the home, the release said.

An adult told officers he heard a noise before the other boys alerted him that Jaylean was injured, Joyce said.

According to warrants, the boy was shot with a .22-caliber rifle.

Almost every day I post stories about kids who find guns and get hurt and killed.  But in most of them no charges are ever brought. Is it not reasonable to conclude that a black man in North Carolina is prejudiced against? 

The most disgraceful thing is the gun-rights fanatics will whine and cry about one-in-a-million anomalies in which one of theirs is roughly handled but they say nothing about this racist disparity in punishing irresponsible gun owners. In fact they deny it despite all the evidence.

North Carolina Man Arrested for Drugs After Accidental Shooting

Police late Monday arrested John Matthew Scruton on charges of possessing drugs they found last Friday after being called to Scruton’s home because a housemate had been shot in the jaw.

Scruton, 27, was charged with having 14 grams of psilocybin mushrooms and possession with intent to distribute 70 grams of marijuana.

About 3 a.m. Friday, Officer M.P. Brown said in a search-warrant request that he had seen drugs when he was checking the house for other people after finding Colin Patrick Ayers, who had turned 28 on Thursday, apparently had shot himself and severely damaged his jaw.

Another roommate, Jacob Fields, told police that Ayers had “shot himself on accident while attempting to clear his firearm” and “was heavily intoxicated at the time.”

Brown told a magistrate that he believed “all weapons should be seized from the possession of Colin Ayers until his mental state can be evaluated.”

Searching the house, police seized the marijuana Brown had seen and discovered the mushrooms, 12 glass vials that held a liquid they suspected was a steroid drug, 23 glass bottles for drugs, 255 syringes, three conventional rifles, two shotguns and a .50-caliber, muzzle-loading, black-powder rifle.

North Carolina Man Arrested Immediately for Accidental Shooting

James Matthew Bogus, 22, suffered a non-life-threatening injury in the incident, said Linda Rawley, Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman. Rawley said Bogus was "accidentally shot with a shotgun by his friend."

Christopher Blake Fagan, 23, is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, resist/delay/obstruct public officers, discharging a firearm in the city limits, parole violation and possession of drug paraphernalia, Rawley said.

An officer was on patrol in the 1200 block of Chestnut Street when a man flagged him down at 10:53 p.m. saying someone had been shot in the head, Rawley said. When officers reached Bogus, he was conscious and alert with a towel on his head, she said.

N.C. Department of Correction records show that in addition to a misdemeanor drug charge, Fagan has felony convictions in 2012 for receiving a stolen vehicle and in 2013 for principal to breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering.

Well, this guy had almost everything going for him to ensure getting arrested after an accidental shooting.  No lengthy investigation necessary when you've got drugs around the house, a criminal record, and wild dred locks. Cops don't like that.

A 5-month-old girl was shot in the arm and leg Wednesday morning in an apparent accident on the front porch of a home on Macon Street

Police charged Arin Tavon Futrell, a 21-year-old Durham man, with felony negligent child abuse resulting in bodily injury. He also was arrested on outstanding warrants for attempted breaking and entering and conspiracy to commit breaking and entering.

Initially, police reported that the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute, but further investigation led them to classify it as an accident.

A woman called 911 about 7:30 a.m. about the incident in the 400 block of Macon Street.

“I need an officer over here to get my statement,” she said, explaining that the child’s mother said her boyfriend – not the child’s father – “shot the baby.”

Futrell and his girlfriend took the child to the hospital after the incident.

“I was in the bed,” the woman told the 911 operator about 10 minutes after the shooting. “I heard something. I thought it was a muffler.”

She saw people arguing on the porch, she said. When she heard the infant’s mother say “he shot her,” the caller thought she meant a neighbor had been shot.

North Carolina 8-Year-old Shoots Herself - No One Charged

Detectives are at a home on Calver Court in north Fayetteville after police said an 8-year-old girl accidentally shot herself Friday.

Fayetteville Police Lt. Todd Joyce said the child was shot in the leg and that the injury was not life threatening. Officers were still investigating Friday evening.

The shooting happened about 4:15 p.m. on the 4000 block of Calver Court.

Joyce said a grandparent was in the home with the child when the shooting occurred.

The child found the handgun in the master bedroom of the home, a news release said.

What parenting advice would you give to those who have both small children and firearms in their household? That’s the dilemma that may now be facing North Carolina father Justin Carper. Carper is a church youth group leader and advice columnist. His unpaid column offering parenting advice appears in the Shelby Star, in Shelby, North Carolina. On Thursday, February 6, Carper’s three-year-old son shot his 17-month-old sister with Carper’s 9mm handgun.

This ‘parenting advice’ columnist didn’t think his three-year-old could find and fire his gun.

Carper told the Gaston Gazette that he kept his gun in a secret compartment atop his dresser. At least he thought it was secret. He was amazed that his three-year-old son could climb on a stool, get the gun, and pull the trigger. What is more amazing is that someone who writes a parenting advice column doesn’t seem to be aware that kids will find anything “hidden” that is not actually under lock and key. Justin Carper is probably aware of that now.

North Carolina 17-Month-old Shot by 3-Year-old Sibling - No Charges for the Parents - They've Suffered Enough

Deputies are investigating after a 17-month-old baby was shot by his or her sibling in a Cleveland County home on Thursday, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said the child was admitted to Carolina's Medical Center for observation after being shot by his or her 3-year-old sibling.

Deputies said the shooting appears to be accidental but they are continuing to investigate.

North Carolina Man Charged in Kid's Death

A father is facing manslaughter and other charges after his baby was accidentally shot and killed.

Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith tells WITN the baby girl was shot Wednesday night around 9 p.m. in a home on Letchworth Drive in Greene County, off of Fort Run Rd.

Smith says the father was holding the rifle on the couch when it accidentally went off, shooting the baby in the chest. The gunshot killed her.

The baby's name has not been released.

Allen Ormond, 28, was originally charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. But the District Attorney's Office told them to also charge him with involuntary manslaughter.

The Greene County man is a convicted felon and is not legally allowed to own a gun. Records show he was convicted in the 2007 of possession of stolen goods in Greene County. Sheriff Smith said Ormond had just bought the rifle earlier Wednesday, hours before the fatal shooting of his baby girl.

Ormond is also charged with possession of a stolen firearm.

Also charged is 28-year-old Kevin Elkins of Kinston. He's charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. He was convicted of larceny in Greene County in 2013. Elkins has also been convicted of multiple DWIs, hit and run, speeding to elude and receiving a stolen vehicle. His conviction record dates back to 2002.

Sheriff Smith says other people were in the house when the baby was fatally shot. He wasn't sure if the baby's mother was there or not.

Greg says no charges are called for since on one was hurt. I think that's an excessively lenient take on it. I find Greg's attitude a bit puzzling too.  If I were a responsible gun owner I would be the first one decrying the irresponsibility of gun owners like this one. They give everyone a bad name, that would be my position.

Concealed carry permit holders are no different than gun owners at large, despite the bizarre claims to the contrary from some of their number. The fact is permit holders commit many acts of bumbling and dangerous gun misuse for which they receive nothing more than a verbal warning to be more careful, if that.

One might think they receive the same special treatment which they continually claim is reserved for the police.

North Carolina Man Arrested for "Accidentally" Shooting and Killing his Friend

The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office says the accidental discharge of a gun has left one man dead and another charged.

Deputies arrived on scene and found a male victim dead from a gunshot wound.

The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Randall Thomas Lewis. Deputies say he died of an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Sheriffs' detectives say the investigation and determined that Lewis and 19-year-old Michael Bradley Rouse were engaged in horseplay while Rouse held a semi-automatic handgun. Rouse reportedly pointed the handgun at the victim believing the gun had the safety engaged. The gun was then fired and a bullet struck Lewis.

Rouse was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, felony possession of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for the use or sale of controlled substances and possession of a firearm by felon. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Now that's the way to ensure that you'll be held accountable for misusing your gun, being a drug dealer. 

I suppose the description of the incident was a bit better this time. "The gun was then fired and a bullet struck Lewis." That's definitely better than " the gun then went off."

Family of NC Girl Shot and Killed Files Suit Against Gun Maker

The family of a teen killed in what has been deemed an accidental shooting two years ago in Columbus County has filed a lawsuit against the maker of the rifle blamed in her death. Two other women hurt in the shooting have joined in the lawsuit against Remington Arms Company, LLC.

Jasmine Thar, 16, of Charlotte, died Dec. 23, 2011, when a single bullet fired from inside a house across the street hit her, Treka McMillian and Jah'mesha McMillian as they stood in a Chadbourn driveway getting ready to go Christmas shopping.

James Blackwell, who lived across the street, told Chadbourn Police his Remington Model 700 rifle fired without pulling the trigger.

Earlier this year prosecutors announced they would not charge Blackwell with a crimeafter an investigation determined Thar's death was the product of an accidental discharge resulting in an unintended consequence.

I'll bet the Remington folks will make a strong case against mechanical failure. Lying gun owners who act negligently love to blame the gun. Our own commenters have been known to do this. But everyone knows true mechanical failures are so rare that it's safe to assume it was due to negligence on the part of the gun owner.

Strange and Deceitful Pro-gun Post by a North Carolina Fanatic

Sean Sorrentino posted the story of a Greensboro NC fast food restaurant that was the victim of a gun control customer sticking a sign prohibiting firearms on the store-front window.

 Here's where he got the story, a fanatical message board for illiterate gun-nuts who ask questions like this: "So this must be a new tacked anti-gunners are deploying?" "New tacked," is that a riot, or what?

I have serious doubts about the veracity of the original story. There was no link to any news source and pro-gun message boards are the places where these guys hone their creative skills. But, my complaint to Sean is his inference that this is something the poor persecuted gun owners need to be on the look out for. His post makes it sound commonplace or at least occasional enough that they need to check. His advice:

There’s a lesson here. If you see a gun ban sign, make sure to question it. It might be some anti-gun jerk posting the sign.

Parents Charged in 3-Year-old North Carolina Kid Shooting

An Asheboro couple is facing charges stemming from the accidental shooting of a 3-year-old girl.

The Randolph County Sheriff's Office charged 27-year-old William Monroe Simmons and 26-year-old Melisa Ann Mumpower with failing to store a firearm to protect a minor and felony child abuse in connection with the shooting.

Deputies said the 3-year-old was shot by another 3-year-old at about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at a home shared by Simmons and Mumpower. The sheriff's office said the child was struck by a bullet from a .22 caliber rifle which was found unsecured in a room where the children were playing. The child underwent surgery Tuesday in Winston-Salem.

North Carolina 3-Year-olds Playing with Parent's Gun - One of Them Gets Shot

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accidental shooting Tuesday of a 3-year-old girl by another 3-year-old in Asheboro.

Deputies said a bullet struck the child in the arm and entered her abdominal area. She underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon at an area hospital. Deputies did not release her name or condition late Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office said a 22-caliber rifle was found unsecured in the room where the children were playing. The gun was in the corner of the room, according to the sheriff’s office, but how the child got a hold of the gun was not clear Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office did not release the names of those involved due to the ages of the children and a need to notify family members of the incident.

It was not clear Tuesday if any charges would be filed.

That home should become a gun-free zone. I can't wait to hear the gun-rights fanatics defend leaving a rifle in the same room with unsupervised 3-year-olds and tell us why the owner of that gun should not lose their gun rights.

"Police say parents should have and use safes in the home, so kids don't confuse a gun for a toy."

But, the gun-rights fanatics are against making such a thing the law.  They even oppose charging the grieving parents with manslaughter.  They've suffered enough, why should they lose their gun rights and he held responsible for their negligent actions?

North Carolina: 2nd Amendment Advocate Shoots Printer by Accident - Runs Away

Police in Wilkesboro are looking for the man who they say accidentally fired a gun in a store during a discussion on the Second Amendment. 

The incident happened Tuesday evening in the GNC store on Winkler Street. 

Police say the man pulled out his gun to show an employee when he accidentally shot a printer. 

According to the police report, the man told the store employee he "could not go down for this," and left.

Moorhead City Cop Loses Job but Keeps the Guns - No Criminal Charges

A Morehead City police officer will not face criminal charges after he accidentally shot a fellow officer during training. 

During a training exercise on Oct. 2, Garrett Hardin, an officer in Morehead City was shot in the chest once by Marvin Willis. Willis, while he will not face criminal charges, has been terminated as a police officer and the negligent discharge of his weapon has been reported to the Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. Willis could face a negligence action in civil court.

That's not good enough.  Losing the job but keeping the guns is completely ass-backwards.

North Carolina Dad Charged in 2-Year-old's Death

The father of a 2-year-old girl who died after accidentally shooting herself after finding a loaded handgun hid the weapon from police investigators, according to an arrest warrant.

Melvin Andre Clark, 19, of the 2600 block of Graham Road, was charged Monday with resisting a public officer and failing to store a firearm to protect a minor.

Both charges are misdemeanors.

Clark was charged Oct. 20 with involuntary manslaughter and possession of firearm by a felon.

Clark's daughter, Samarri Tyana Beauford, died Oct. 19 after a single gunshot struck her in the head, Fayetteville police said.

The toddler was playing when she found the loaded .22-caliber semi-automatic Beretta pistol under a couch, police said.

Clark attempted to impede Detective Ronnie Hutchins' investigation by taking the pistol and hiding it behind a home on the 6500 block of Amanda Circle, according to arrest documents.

North Carolina 2-Year-old Dead - Charges Expected

The Fayetteville Police Department said a 2-year-old girl died after accidentally shooting herself Saturday afternoon.

Police said officers responded to the 2600 block of Graham Road around 12:40 p.m. Responding officers found a 2-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound.

Investigators said the girl was not breathing when they first responded. She was transported immediately to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and police believe EMS performed CPR on the way in attempts to save her.

"The child sustained the injuries due to an unsecured handgun in the residence. We have obtained that handgun," said Cpt. Charles Hunter with the Fayetteville Police Department. 

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said.

Police said the girl found the loaded weapon and it discharged, killing her. 

Currently no charges have been filed yet, but the police say as the investigation continues, that will most likely change. 

Moorhead City, North Carolina Police Officer Injured in Accidental Shooting

A city police officer suffered a gunshot wound Wednesday morning during a training exercise.

The incident, which Mayor Jerry Jones called “a tragic” accident as he spoke during a news conference at the department, is under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation. Police Chief Wrenn Johnson said that was protocol.

The mayor said the department has the city’s support and the incident was an accident.

“This is very tragic,” the mayor said. “We are very supportive of the police department. We are a big family. They (officers) train hard, but accidents can happen. We learn and improve. Both these officers are in our hearts.”

Police say the officer has a gunshot wound sustained in the accident in the rear parking lot of the police department about 8 a.m. and was transferred by helicopter from Carteret General Hospital to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Now, wait a minute. Was the injury sustained during training or in the back parking lot? 

One thing is clear, the mayor and the police are all one big family.  They cover up each other's negligence every chance they get.
