Oklahoma Pro-gun Lawmaker Admits to Accidental Shooting at Hunting Reserve

A state representative who has authored pro-gun legislation is taking the blame for the accidental shooting of a hunter a month ago in northern Oklahoma.

“I just felt horrible about it. I just was sick,” said Rep. Steve Vaughan, who was shooting at a pheasant with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Another hunter, Drew Ihrig, was hit in the side of the head by a single shotgun pellet about the size of a BB.

“I was shot but it was a minor injury. I’m fine. It’s no big deal,” said Ihrig, an attorney with offices in Bartlesville and Blackwell. “This was a pure accident. It could have happened to anybody on any given day. I hold no ill will at all.”

The pheasant hunt was at the Bluestem Hunting Reserve north of Perry.

“We’ve been doing this for 15 years. We’ve had over 4,000 people come through. First time anybody has been injured,” the reserve owner said.

Vaughan, R-Ponca City, was elected in 2010. He is 55.

The conservative lawmaker authored legislation in 2011 patterned after Oklahoma’s Make My Day law. The legislation expanded the right to business owners, managers and employees to use deadly force when they have a reasonable fear they face death or great bodily harm.

He also was the House author in 2011 of legislation that created an official annual “Second Amendment Day” in Oklahoma. The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects the rights of the people to keep and bear arms.

Even though the victim of the negligence said it was no big deal, it was. Anytime a gun owner violates the safety rules and someone is injured, that gun owner should be held accountable. It doesn't matter if the injury is single shotgun pellet in the face or the loss of life; the negligent behavior is the same and should be taken very seriously.

Of course, the irresponsible gun handling was not the only offense.  So-called hunters who go to reserves to shoot animals are the lowest of the low. That's not hunting at all.

Cherokee County sheriff’s investigators filed a report this week on the accidental shooting of a 5-year-old boy. Deputy Dexter Scott spoke to the boy’s mother this week and learned her older son had gone hunting with a friend. 

When the two finished hunting, the boys left the rifle on a bed, where the 5-year-old later found it. The woman said she was working in her office when she heard her son yelling for help. 

She went to the boy, who told her the gun had “hit” him. She noticed a bullet hole in the boy’s leg and took him to a local hospital. Medical personnel told deputies the boy will make a full recovery, and the bullet had not caused serious damage.

A woman was taken to the hospital after she was shot at a home in Wagoner County.

According to authorities, a woman was wounded when a gun accidentally discharged inside the residence.

She was transported by medics to Wagoner Community Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, [Rocky Point, Maj. Gary] Handley said. 

No arrests have been made, Handley said.

The Lawton man charged for shooting his friend's eye out after a marijuana session has waived his preliminary hearing.

A formal arraignment has been scheduled for Tyrel Whately on Jan. 9 where his lawyer said he will enter a plea of "not guilty."

Back in October, police say Whatley was pretending his friend, Mark Camacho Ramos, was a zombie after the two had smoked marijuana. We're told Whatley pointed a gun at him as a joke when the gun went off. Whatley claims he panicked, destroyed the drugs and buried the gun in the backyard. Ramos later lost his eye as a result.

Lawful Gun Owner in Arkansas Does Triple Murder and Suicide

Police say a grandfather killed his two grandchildren and his daughter’s boyfriend in a shooting Tuesday afternoon in rural Crawford County. 

Crawford County Sheriff Ron Brown said Tim Adams, believed to be in his early 50s, then killed himself after shooting his 4-month-old grandson, 4-year-old granddaughter and the boyfriend of his daughter. 

Brown said when Adams’ daughter, boyfriend and two children drove up to the home Tuesday afternoon, 

Adams came outside carrying a gun. He fired a shot, wounding the woman’s boyfriend, and then shot the 4-month-old boy, who was in a carseat in the back seat of the vehicle, Brown said. The woman grabbed the wounded infant and exited the car, running into the home, Brown said. 

Adams pursued her, firing shots as she fled with the infant, before he returned to the front yard and shot his 4-year-old granddaughter, Brown said. “(The boyfriend) was in the front passenger seat of the vehicle when he was shot,” Brown said. 

“He exited the vehicle after being shot and died in the yard. It looked like he tried to run into the house as well.” Adams’ daughter was not wounded, Brown said.  

I'll bet he had a concealed carry permit too, but after all this, who's checking? Especially in cases where the permit holder ends up dead, no one cares any more if he had a CCW permit or a library card or anything else.  What's the difference?

The Rogers County, Oklahoma Sheriff’s Department arrested three men after one of them was accidentally shot. Authorities are still searching for the gun used in the shooting.

According to Sheriff Scott Walton, the three men were hunting Bigfidth=580oot late Saturday night, when one of them was spooked by what he thought might be the legendary beast and fired his weapon, hitting his friend in the back.

Sheriff Walton said that while authorities cannot “locate the weapon that was used,” it “probably was an accidental shooting.” It is not yet known if drugs or alcohol played any part in the accident.

The gun-rights fanatics would have us believe that young people who own guns rarely do this kind of thing. In The Famous 50% I estimated the percentage of gun owners who smoke pot, use other drugs and drink to excess.

Lawful gun owners in many states smoke dope through shotgun barrels and play zombie games with loaded guns. It's called partying and it's not just done in Oklahoma.

Lawful Oklahoma Gun Owner Shoots Girlfriend in the Back - Claims it was an Accident

Tulsa police arrested a suspect after an early Sunday morning shooting. 

Around 12:30 a.m., Deangelo Stevens got in an argument with his girlfriend and followed her into the bathroom where she was trying to hide. The police report states Stevens admitted, after being arrested, to "tusseling" with the victim when the gun went off. Steven's 4-year old daughter was present with his girlfriends 14-year-old daughter. The 14-year-old is who called 911 for her mother.

Stevens claims it was an accidental shooting, but police arrested and charged him with shooting with intent to kill, and domestic assault and battery in the presence of a minor. 

The woman was shot in her back and is in critical condition at St. Francis hospital.

I wonder if he had a concealed carry permit?  Unless some invasive reporter comes up with the info, no one will bother to check. It has nothing to do with the case.

Furious at the killing of an Australian college baseball player in Oklahoma, a senior figure in the victim's home country blamed the “gun culture” of United States for the death, saying it was “corrupting the world."

“The U.S. has chosen the pathway of illogical policy with regard to guns," Australia’s former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer said Friday. "They cannot expect not to have any criticism of it worldwide.”

“I am angry because it is corrupting the world, this gun culture of the United States.” 

His remarks came as the family of slain catcher Christopher Lane struggled to understand why three teens killed him, apparently telling cops they were bored.

"He was a kid on the cusp of making his life," the victim’s father, Peter, told The Age newspaper in Melbourne. "He gave up a lot to follow his dreams. There's not going to be any good come out of this because it was just so senseless."

Lane, 22, had left Melbourne to attend East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, where he was on a baseball scholarship. 

Fischer said the lack of gun control in the U.S. had led to a massacre “each and every year since 1996” - in contrast to Australia, which has restrictions on firearms ownership.

He said the majority of illegally obtained guns used in crimes in Australia and Mexico had come from the U.S.

He added that he was not against guns, and kept weapons at his rural home, but added: "I am in favor of firearms sensible regulations to have the best of both worlds.

The dead boy was screaming "someone's tryin' to kill me."  Does that sound like he was breaking in to "get the family?"  No, of course not.  It sounds like he was in some kind of distress and the shooter over-reacted.
