Blind Ohio Gun Owner Charged in His Daughter's Accidental Shooting

Bond was set at $100,000 yesterday for a legally blind Toledo man charged with accidentally shooting his toddler.

Michael C. Reyes, 27, was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court on charges of possessing weapons while under disability and negligent assault in the weekend shooting of Kaylee Reyes.

The shooting occurred about 1:45 p.m. Saturday in the family’s residence, according to police. The toddler was admitted to the pediatric intensive-care unit of Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Reyes told police he was holding the handgun when it went off and a bullet struck his 3-year-old daughter, according to court documents.

New York Flags 278 Gun Owners as Mentally Unstable

New York State’s tough new SAFE Act gun control law has flagged 278 gun owners who could lose their weapons because they have been deemed mentally unstable, a new report shows.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged lawmakers to pass the SAFE Act quickly after the 2012 mass shooting at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reported last week that since the law’s enactment, the state has collected 38,718 names in a database of individuals who have been found at-risk for owning guns by psychiatrists and other health professionals.

The paper said when the database was checked against a list of pistol permit holders in the state, there were 278 matches, less than 1 percent.

I wonder what that percentage would be in Louisiana or Mississippi?

Blind Florida Man Shoots Intruder - Turns Out it was His Nephew who Lived There.

A blind Florida man shot an intruder who broke into his home, who turned out to be his teenage nephew. Police detailed the incident Monday, now clarifying if either or both men would face any charges.

Melchisedec Williams was woken up on Sunday night when he heard a crash and stomping. The 50-year-old man grabbed his gun, Tampa police said. The intruder, armed with only a knife, had cut the power to the man’s house and broken in through a bedroom window, police added.

Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy told press that Williams, who is legally blind, called the name of his nephew, Isaiah Moses Carter, 15, asking if that was who had entered the house, McElroy said. Hearing no response, Williams fired his weapon.

The teen groaned loud enough after being shot, that Williams recognized him as Isaiah.

“That’s what made me stop shooting,” he said. “I was in the dark, and I was ready to unload that gun until I heard his voice.”

This reminds me of the 12-year-old Texas girl who shot an intruder through the closet door where she was hiding.  The gun nuts used that one the to justify kids having guns and shooting through doors. Would I rather that she'd been raped, tortured and killed, they asked.

An eastern Missouri woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison for fatally shooting her boyfriend with a gun that she believed wasn’t loaded.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 21-year-old Makenzie Halinski of Festus was sentenced Wednesday in the June 2013 death of 20-year-old Cole Campbell. She pleaded guilty in June.

Halinski had been drinking and smoking marijuana. She told police that Campbell had been showing her how to use guns, handed her a gun and told her it was unloaded and the safety was on.

Halinski told authorities that she pointed the gun at Campbell and shot, believing the gun wasn’t loaded. The bullet hit Campbell in the forehead.

Too many gun owners don't believe in that. And after they shoot someone, they know the right things to say.  "He was reaching for something."  And, "I was afraid for my life."

Florida Man Arrested for Mistaken Shooting

A Seminole man was arrested Nov. 18 after accidentally shooting a 17 year old under his care.

James Harrison Wolf, who has prior convictions of crimes in California, is being held on $7,500 bond at the Pinellas County Jail. He was charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Wolf also is a registered sex offender.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s detectives the shooting happened just before midnight Sunday, Nov. 17, at a private residence on Anchorage Circle in Seminole. 

Detectives said Taylor Titus, 17, left his home about 9 p.m. without telling his caregivers, James Wolf, 55, and Nancy Wolf, 56, and returned home shortly before midnight. When Titus got home, Wolf was preparing to go to sleep and had turned off all the lights in the home. Wolf then heard a noise coming from the back of the home, grabbed his handgun and went to check his residence.

Wolf noticed a subject near the backdoor and ordered him to freeze. The subject began to walk towards Wolf. Wolf then fired one shot, hitting the subject. When the subject stumbled towards Wolf, he realized it was Titus.

Pennsylvania Woman Accidentally Shot with her Own Gun - Shooter Charged

State Police in Pennsylvania have charged a Fayette County man who accidentially shot a woman with a gun he thought was unloaded.

Jeremy Hambrosky, 24 is facing involuntary manslaughter.  His bond has been set at $50,000.  State Police say troopers were called to Bullskin Township in Fayette County Sunday afternoon and found Kylie Sage, 23, in the driver's seat with injuries to upper, left torso, sitting in a pool of blood.  She died at the scene.

Hambrosky told police she handed him a gun she had purchased on Saturday.  He asked if the gun was loaded and she assured him it was not.  Hambrosky pulled back the slide and as he returned it to the starting position the gun discharged.  The bullet hit Sage under the armpit and hit the driver's side mirror.  

It's hard to decide who's a stupider and more unfit gun owner, the dead girl or her friend who's charged with her death.

Yet, gun-rights fanatics oppose all attempts at raising the bar as to who can own guns.
