Two accused of waving gun at a post-tornado barbecue
Two men and a woman are accused of disrupting a neighborhood barbecue in tornado-ravaged north Minneapolis by screaming at residents and waving a handgun.
Glen A. Miles, 32, of Hopkins, and Jonique L. Shannon, 26, of Minneapolis, are charged with second-degree riot, a felony. Miles and James Flowers, 32, of Minneapolis, are charged with obstructing legal process, a gross misdemeanor.
According to the criminal complaints filed Wednesday in Hennepin County District Court: On Monday evening, about 24 hours after a tornado damaged scores of homes and businesses, neighbors gathered at Lowry and Logan avenue to grill food. Witnesses saw Miles drinking and as he became increasingly drunk, he became combative and "appeared to be looking for a fight," the complaints said.
Although witnesses said Shannon and Flowers initially tried to calm down Miles, Shannon pulled a gun, waved it around and threatened people to leave Miles alone. Flowers then took the gun and did the same. Witnesses told police that Flowers was "out of control and yelling at everyone."
Neighbors ran for cover and police officers who went to the incident described "a chaotic scene," the complaint said. Shannon admitted she'd had a gun and told officers where they could find it. Miles allegedly resisted arrest, kicking, spitting and swinging at officers. He had to be carried to a squad car, where he kicked an officer in the stomach, the complaints said.
