Newark Lawful Gun Owner Shoots at Mosquito-Spraying Truck

The Newark Advocate reports

A Newark man accused of shooting at a truck spraying for mosquitoes was charged with felonious assault for injuring the driver.

David B. Brown, 56, last known address 6 Kreig St., reportedly fired several shots at the 1997 Ford Ranger on Cherry Street between Maple Avenue and Hollander Street on Aug. 10, Newark police Sgt. Scott Snow said.

Brown told police he was trying to protect his dog, which he thought would be injured by the mosquito spray, Snow said.
Here's my question. Which categories of The Famous 10% do you think this guy belonged to? I say all of them except domestic abuser and rapist, but I'm just guessin'.

What do you think?

  1. Where is the part that said he was a legal gun owner? Or were you just Jading it?

  2. FWM,I did not see the reference in the linked source to a legal gun either; perhaps it was listed in some other source for the story however.

Do you have any source which shows it was not a legal gun?

And would it being a legal versus illegal gun (this is NJ after all) make it any different in terms of responding to the behavior?

I was actually laughing a little, because I was surprised that there were any cops still on the payroll to investigate, or money being spent on services like spraying for mosquito control, in New Jersey. I'm afraid it distracted me from the rest of the story, after my initial interest in the shooting aspect.

  3. Dogone,

I too was puzzled about the mosquito spraying. Why would the government have a 1997 Ford Ranger driven by a 71 year old. Maybe a contract job?

Anyway, since 100% of criminals own illegal guns the odds are that this was an illegal gun but anything is possible. Actually the number of legal gun owners that go on to commit crimes are relatively few in spite of Mike's 10% number.

However, if you are a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, you are far more likely to be a felon.

  4. FWM is right, it's not in the story that he's a legal gun owner. But, when drawing conclusions from the facts, this is one of my better ones. The charges mentioned did not include illegal possession or felon in possession, which they certainly would have.

FWM and others like to call me out on often fleshing out the story too much, of which I am guilty, but this is not a good example.

And you chide Mikeb302000? You have three separate, unsubstantiated assertions in three sentences.

  6. Fact: 2.3% of the MAIG members have been convicted of felonies.

  7. Wait, isn't that the same percentage as the Michigan CCW guys? Of course with the mayors it's a much more reliable stat. There's not much room for them to hide.
