Michigan Fanatics Hold a Rally for Gun Rights

LSJ.com reports

Armed with rifles, pistols, flags and banners, about 150 people rallied for gun rights Saturday on the lawn of the Capitol, warning lawmakers not to rollback firearms possession laws such as “stand your ground.”

Speakers urged lawmakers to expand gun rights by making Michigan the fifth U.S. state to adopt “constitutional carry,” essentially removing restrictions and licensing provisions for concealed carry.

Michigan already allows open carry for those 18 or older who are carrying a firearm that is legally registered and holstered in plain view, said rally organizer John Roshek, president of the Citizens League for Self Defense.

“Constitutional carry is about having no permits or permission slips from the state in order to be able to carry a gun,” he said. “It starts with repealing all pistol-free zones. It starts with repealing the concealed pistol license laws. We feel if you are legally able to obtain and purchase a firearm that is the only permit you should need.”

They've got their cool flags and all the banners, but I'll bet the one thing they didn't have is a picture of the All Time Poster Boy of Constitutional Carry.

  1. From the perspective of authoritarians, it's such a shame when people exercise their rights and such a risk. But get used to it. People around the world and around this country are waking up.

  2. Hmm. About 150 people were in a public place with all manner of handguns and rifles and no one shot anybody.

  3. By the way what makes people publicly advocating for their rights fanatics?

    1. Open carry is fanatical, and worse, it's counterproductive to their cause. Fanatics often can't see the forest for the trees.

  4. Why didn't the police protect Gabby Giffords?

    Aren't the cops to blame?

    1. No, the cops aren't to blame. The gun owners who support such asinine ideas as Constitutional Carry are to blame-.

    2. Constitutional carry doesn't include carrying with criminal intent.

    3. Mike, so are you suggesting that without constitutional carry, Loughner would not have shot anyone?

    4. Yup, that's what he's saying. He won't admit it, but there it is. If only there'd been a law against carrying a gun. . . You can see Loughner now, sitting in his room, contemplating what he wanted to do. He's going to commit murder, lots of murder, but dang it, carrying a weapon without a license is illegal. Oh well, better just stay home then.

And Mikeb, before you yammer about gun availability and lax background checks, remember that Arizona has a long border with Mexico. Lots of things cross that border.

    5. Greg, If I said that, you'd lecture me about "innocent until proven guilty."

I'm not saying that without Constitutional Carry Loughner would not have done what he did, but you never know. With a nut like that, anything's possible.

What I am saying is he's your poster boy for that particular gun right. Suck it up.

    6. Do you seriously believe that Loughner would have left his gun at home if Arizona required people to have licenses to carry? He'd be deterred from committing a Class A felony by the risk of committing a misdemeanor?
