Democrat in Name Only (DINO)

What makes this guy a Democrat?

Strickland is a rare democrat who has received the support of the National Rifle Association, a fact Strickland didn’t shy away from as he visited the trap shooting range. A large trailer noting the NRA endorsement sat in front of the Sportsmen’s Club complex, while members of Strickland’s support staff wore button’s citing the same.

“My record shows I am a strong supporter of the second amendment,” Strickland said. “I voted against the assault weapon ban and have always supported the rights of people to have firearms as well as supporting hunting, fishing, and trapping.”

Although Strickland did not shoot a rifle on this day, he said he had been a hunter as a child and helped start a statewide youth turkey hunting trip during his time as governor.

“Conservatives ought to vote for me,” Strickland said, citing his efforts to cut taxes, reduce government and his support of the Second Amendment.
Do you think not supporting the 2nd Amendment is a deal breaker for candidates in places like Ohio? Should it be?

    Yes.

    "Should it be?"

Yes, it should be anywhere. How can you raise your hand and swear to protect and defend the Constitution and not support the Bill of Rights?

  2. Why do gun ban proponents such as yourself always try to make gun rights a partisan issue?

  3. Does Strickland not pass the Jadefool's Biggest Cheerleader Democrat Purity Test?

    UNCLEAN!!! CAST HIM OUT!!!

Has it ever occurred to you that if the Democrats had enough Stricklands, gun owner distrust of the party would eventually dry up, eventually leading to more Democrats in office, and a better chance for other policies you value?

You can whine about gun rights advocates being single issue voters, but the fact remains that as long as pro-rights single issue voters outnumber anti-rights single issue voters (and I doubt anyone sees that changing any time soon), a pro-rights stance is going to look good to a politician who does the math.

  4. Ohio is a weird place. Very union heavy, but also very gun heavy. So any democrat who is pro-gun has it made.

  5. Good analysis about Ohio, AztecRed.

FWM asked "How can you raise your hand and swear to protect and defend the Constitution and not support the Bill of Rights?"

It's not the Bill of Rights, FWM. It's simply an interpretation of one single amendment, the 2nd. Many people believe the individual right interpretation is bogus. Those people could raise their hand and swear to protect and defend, no problem.

Which is what Strickland's opponent did and why he will not be getting my vote.
