Werner Herzog's "Into the Abyss"

  1. Cut through the sentimental crap, and the simple truth is clear: There's an easy way to avoid being executed. Don't commit murder.

  2. While I am opposed to capital punishment I have to largely agree with Greg. The very best way to avoid having the state take your life is to not commit crimes which carry the death penalty. I avoid speeding tickets by not speeding. I don't get charged with (and convicted of)DWI because I don't drink and drive. Likewise with burglary, armed robbery, kidnapping or any other crime. So, while I might want to see the death penalty repealed, that doesn't address the underlying issue. The way to avoid any penalty is to not do the thing that carries the penalty and don't associate with those who do.

    1. As a matter of fact, I don't really support the death penalty. It's badly done in a great many ways. Herzog should realize, though, that he won't get much support for his cause by trying to make us feel sorry for known and convicted murderers.

    2. I concur. My apologies for an inaccurate assumption.

    3. RM, when we're talking about whether or not capital punishment is right or not, you cannot say the best way to not get executed by the state is to not commit murder.
That's the same thing you guys keep doing in the castle doctrine arguments. You say, the best way to not get shot by a homeonwner is to not break into his house. That doesn't comment on the rectitude of shooting home invaders, just like your remark about not committing capital offenses does not address the issue which is capital punishment.

    4. No need to apologize. The death penalty is a complex subject, so my views on it aren't simple.
